Why are so many of today's young adults depressed?

you are in denial if you blame 'society' for your problems. If you aren't willing to go out and take chances and work two jobs and keep pushing because you would rather blame economy...you are protecting your ego from being harmed by the truth. No one likes being told he isn't working hard enough.

in a track metaphor - you can get to 80% of your potential by running 30 miles per week. If you have some talent you might break 5 in the mile and be on a varsity xc team.

And you can then shout at the world, wishign that you were born with more talent. Rage against the night.

Or

you can go run 50 miles per week and most likely drop 15 seconds in the mile and be a top 3 guy.

life's like that whether you like to admit it or not.

thinking the principal of hard work applies in track but not in life is serious denial.

Proving the point of the you failed so "work harder". Boomers practically invented rest and leisure and now tell todays kids to work 2-3 jobs to makes end meet.

Some of you guys are ridiculous. Blaming that you were told that you could do anything, or you were told of the American Dream, but didn't come to realization? That's why you're depressed? So, we're told to dream big, but you did just that, just dream instead of doing anything, of course, you're going to be depressed. When your parents and teachers said that to you, they didn't expect you to be a complete moron and take dream big literally and just dream and not do anything. Right now in this world, we have more opportunities than ever before if you're willing.

The guy is right about if you're down, you go into survival mode, and you will survive. Actually, it's not even survival mode. All you're doing is cutting back on some creature comfort if you're in money trouble, and you'll easily survive here.

To get back to the original question of why more people are depressed now. If this is a true statement, I would think that more people have too much time in their hand. You're probably just bored with having too much time.

let's say you owed money and were having trouble getting by.

how is 'get a second job' and 'spend less' bad advice?

seems like universally good advice to me no matter who is giving it.

Is working 2 jobs just so that you feed yourself and pay off debt really going to help people with depression? Seems like a pretty crappy way to live

I was going to say 50% Obamacare, and 50% global warming, and 50% inability to find a decent paying job.

You totally missed the point. agip is talking about what to do in order to get yourself out of a hole. So:

1) That is not a 'way of life'. It is a way to change one's life

2) It is also a step on the path toward success. So, no, having the vision of where you want to get to and taking the steps necessary to get there really are not depressing notions to anyone with any sense.

Please work on your reading comprehension. Or your attitude. Or something. Anything.

Limited opportunity.

Living in parent's house after college, due to limited opportunity.

Realization that simply participating does not make you a winner and there really are winners and losers.

Employer doesn't allow pink Mohawks in support of mom.

Can't wear pajamas to work.

Work sucks and kids weren't prepared for that.

Parents didn't prepare kids to be responsible, productive members of society.

No critical thinking skills - taught what to know, not how to think.

Inability to communicate effectively both face to face and in writing. As evidence, simply read some of the posts here.

Having been given everything - feel entitled to getting the best, while having little to nothing to offer in exchange.

Zero entrepreneurial spirit.

Graduated with a college degree in business economics and a good gpa (phi beta kappa) and can't even get a job working at McDonalds or Wal Mart. No one will even accept my volunteer services. That's right. The Humane Society will not even let me pick up others dogs' crap.

you, HMcC, are a tiny minority. The unemployment rate for college grads in their 20s is around 5.5%.
