Perfect! Put in prelims and it will become even less popular. You think the 10,000 was boring this yr. It's my event and I hate watching it. Seriously, watch the last lap!

should be 3 events - 100m, 1500m/mile and Marathon. The rest are a waste and just repetitive. 100m is speed and Marathon is endurance. 1500 is short enough to keep the average joe's attention and long enough to require some endurance. Get rid of all other events as they are redundant. Field events - 2 jumps (high and long) and 2 throws (Javelin and Shot). No multi's as they are for losers who can't win individual events. Hurdles aren't necessary either. Scratch relays as the US,Brits and Canadians have a tough time finishing (4x100 anyway) without getting Dq'd.

Completely agree

It was never a Diamond League scoring event.

Well that's a stupid and irrelevant thing to say. A) Michael Phelps would likely have a hard time running 12.9, but he's quite an athlete. B) it doesn't really matter what coach d accepts as athlete or not, does it?

No such thing has been proposed. And if it was proposed, it would have to be proposed by the IAAF first for IOC to act on it. That's the same IAAF that is deemphasizing XC and is sponsoring the Diamond League that removed the 10000 because nobody wants to watch it on TV.
I cannot accept any male with 12.9 speed as an athlete. There are masters women (several, in fact) who have run faster than that this year. This is not the Paralympics. We do not need made-up events so non-athletic losers can feel good about themselves. Let Farah either run 1500 with the big boys or run road races with the rest of the hobby joggers.
Coach d. I don't know what's dumber. The fact that you don't realize that many people do enjoy distance events (they were more popular on TV than long jump in the Olympics after all), or the fact that you spend your time hanging out in a forum for distance runners. The sad part is your handle suggests that you're an adult.
Just to add, I tweeted a guy who is in the know (Nick Zaccardi). He had not heard anything about it.
If there hadn't been a prelim in 1996 Haile Gebrselassie would have another gold medal. He would have cleaned up the track with that field.

The amount of ignorance in this sentence makes me smile.
What would the point of 10,000m heats be? Just make the times more difficult. What a dumb idea.

The favorites were likely just toying with the scrubs and outkicked them easily. I'm not old enough to claim to know the players back in the day.
Or the field is more stratified today. In any event, only a few guys really have a chance at a 10,000 medal today. Most of the guys who lined up in Moscow had no chance.
Correct.
Total waste of time.

Doubling is getting more rare. How many guys did it this year? Farah and Rupp? Is that it?
The decision would impact those guys.
Um...ever heard of CAM MF LEVINS?

Semis will only eliminate scrubs with no medal chance. To make them worthwhile, they would have to give Ken, ETH, etc 10 slots each.
Why do they limit how many entrants a country can have at all in an Olympic event? Entry should be purely based on meeting a world class qualifying time. The Olympic distance events are a joke when only a few Kenyans and Ethopians can run excluding many of the fastest runners on the planet who are mostly from Kenya and Ethopia!

USA Swimming would be okay with this idea.
The real answer is that if you had just a couple of countries sports might die and ratings might be low, less interest.
The more running prelims the better. The more running events the better. Anything to boost the profile of running, compared to the surfeit of swimming events and relays.
10,000 meter prelims
Sprint Medley Relay
Distance Medley relay
4 mile relay
Half marathon
And any team or individual cross country events.
in Farahs defense, he does have better than 12.9 speed
case in point sub 51 second last lap of a 5k
with his 3:28, theres no way hes not 50flat or a little better for an open 400, which means he is faster than 12.9, that was a gimmick exhibition race in horrible conditions of course he wasnt going to cruise it
What some lazy people run for 100 yards and who can't even run a lap of the track doesn't matter.
With the women also running the 10k the logistics of scheduling two more 10k running events is problematic. When there was a 10k prelim only the men ran the 10k.
Also consider that the women now run the 5k rather than the 3k which was first held in the 1984 Olympics. That event also takes away available time for conduction a 10k prelim.
