Rupp ran 1:49 when he was training for shorter distances, now that he is better at all distances perhaps he could run 1:48, perhaps even 1:47 if all of the stars align. I seriously doubt he could break 1:47 even if he trained for it simply because Rupp is long distance runner with good speed and the 800 is a different animal
Rupp can run 1:43.5. He has the best range of any runner in history.

Rupp would have crushed Centro indoors head to head that's pretty much a fact proven by Centro's races and Rupp's races. To say someone who went 3:50.92 indoors in his only serious attempt has no chance against Centro and Leo (are you kidding?) is kind of insane. Leo just lost to Cory Leslie by 2 full seconds. You really want to stand by that statement? To have no chance, Rupp would have to be worse than Leo/Centro on his best day compared to their worst day, and nobody who follows the sport would believe that.

Not sure what you consider killer, but if you think that he could sniff a top three finish in a stacked marathon field then you're delusional. 33 times the marathon has been run under 2:05 and four of those times came at Boston in the same year. A "killer" marathon would be low 2:05 or sub 2:05. If you think that just because he can run a fast 5/10,0000 and a fast half that your golden boy could just "blast a killer marathon", then you must not know much about running.

Nobody said anything about championship races. And Mrr82 is right, nobody who isn't brain dead would say Rupp has no chance against Leo. Leo had a great year last year, but he's not the poster child of consistency. Rupp ran a time indoors that are faster equivelent than Leo ran last year. Most people wouldn't be shocked to see Rupp go 3:31-3:32 outdoors. It's not a stretch to suggest Rupp could take Leo in a championship race this year. Leo was dead on at the Olympics, will he be as good this year come championship time? Who knows, point is it's not guaranteed.
Rupp doesn't have a chance against Good Leo. He could take Bad Leo pretty easily, though.

Just to clarify - are we talking Rupp running as a clean runner, or Rupp running on all this "thyROID" therapy and god knows what else? Just want to know so I can comment more informed.

Al is a genius and he is revolutionizing distance runners. Rupp has insane speed and he will be a dominat force for years to come.
He ran 350 on 200 meter track several months ago. He wasnt even close to being in top form, either.
To say he would have a hard time breaking 148 is just ludicrous.

Well yeah Rupp could not beat Centro or Leo during a championship time because he does not train for their events. If he put one season of 8/15 training i have little doubt he could run 144 and 332. Will he? No but im pretty sure he could. But a 144 doesnt win anything a 26:45 ability could definitely win him something. Yes no sub 2650 guy has ever run under 145 but how many have actually tried. Bekele in his prime closed 5ks in close to 150.

In two weeks we have a little race in San Diego. Solomon, Sowinski, Jock, Lomong, Boaz, and others are ALL running the 800. I know at least Uceny and other from her group will be there on the womens side. No mention of Rupp.

Well, the reason I have termed it overrated is partially due to the fact that people keep calling it an indoor 3:50 mile, when it is 3:50.92. So, let's say it is worth 3:33.8 or so. Do you consider that a fair conversion? Well, considering Galen is a sub 13 minute 5000m runner, to run 3:33.8 does not shock me, and certainly does not indicate to me somebody who can break 1:46 when you realize he is a sub 27 runner. Geb run 3:31.76 indoors, so for Rupp to be roughly 2 seconds slower does not seem unbelievably impressive, and yet it is very good, no doubt. I just think it is the kind of time that Galen can be expected to produce with his credentials.
if a 1500 meter specialist would have ran a 350 mile indoors several months backs, nearly breaking the AR, nobody would doubt that the 1500 specialist could potentially have 144/145 speed. but when a 5/10k guy does it, people assume that running 144/145 would be impossible. why? because he is a 5/10k runner and they aren't supposed to have speed.
people are trained to believe you can't be a long distance runner AND have speed. fortunately for rupp, sal thinks outside the box. not only does rupp have a god-like aerobic capacity, but sal is giving him some serious wheels, which will explain his future olympic/WC gold medals.
keep in mind, the outdoor WC are months away. rupp essentially ran that time off basework. image him fine tuned and sharp as a tack.

Why do you assume Rupp didn't peak for that mile? He's always had a full indoor and outdoor season.
from an interview, sal said the only reason he raced the mile was because he was closing interval sessions with sub 4s. they thought if he could run sub 4 in workouts, he might be able to run fast with fresh legs in a competitive environment.
rupp runs sub 4...in workouts.
