Andres Arroyo (FL) on Fire the Year - 1:47.79 at Florida Relays after 4:04 1600 two weeks ago!!!

Just watched the 800. Why do three kids have numbers on the backs of their uniform tops like they are basketball uniforms?

He could have run faster if he had gone out a little faster. Even splits rarely lead to fast times in the 800.

I think he could run 51 mid, 54 mid and run 1:46 (for the national high school record).

Does anyone know if Andres Arroyo was held back a year or what his dob/age is? If he was held back all this hype is much less impressive.

And as far as him competing for PR, he moved to the USA only a few years ago so the argument that he should be competing for the USA is stupid.

This doesn't mean anything unless they drug tested him after

1) Go vote for Santorum.

2) See Estrada, Bernard Lagat, Abel Cheruiyot and Gregory Konchellah. Make a valid point before sounding like a broken record.

And that makes what Arroyo is doing any better? Arroyo is already a citizen he has no excuse.

Estrada initially was going to try and compete for the US if I remember correctly. Something was messed up in the process so he decided to represent Mexico in the Olympics since he could not even try and represent the US. That is fine since he had no shot at the US team now anyway. I'm not sure what he is doing now but I would hope he sticks to his initial statement and competes for the US not Mexico. If it's the other way around he took advantage of the system in the US and obviously does not have the proper respect for what we did as a country to allow him to reach this point in his career. It's the same with all foreigners, I have no problem if you enter the country just understand that you must respect our way and our government by representing the country that will allow you to live a more comfortable lifestyle, the US. By competing for another country after the US gave you a job, education, and a comfortable life style you are taking for granted all that the country has done for you. Abda, Manzano, and Lomong recognize this (just to name a few) time will only tell if Estrada and Arroyo do as well.

Like I said before, he moved to the USA only a few years ago. Somehow I highly doubt you'd compete for Canada if your direct family moved there after only a few years, esp with all the rest of your family still in the US. I don't expect anyone to represent the US if they've only lived here for a few years.

I do see your point and you are right, I'm more thinking down the road, Lomong moved here I believe when he was a Soph in high school (same time as Arroyo if what your saying is true). Lomong competed for the US and praises the US despite his family being in Sudan. I just hope Arroyo a few years down the road recognizes the same thing and competes for the US like Lomong did/is doing and not keep competing for PR, unless he moves back and raises his potential family in PR.

What i am saying is in no way taking away from his accomplishment, that race was unbelievable to watch and with his solid range the kid definitely has a bright future in track. I just hope it is for the US that is all.

Though I also hope that he runs for the US in the future, I must say that comparing Sudan to Puerto Rico isn't exactly fairAnd who knows, maybe Puerto Rico will be a state before too long ;)

Why PR has an Olympic team, I don't know. But they do, so he is not being a traitor by representing them.

If you are a long time Letsrun reader/poster, you know I generally don't get into the citizenship debate, in fact most of the time I side with whatever the athlete decides. There are a lot of valid reasons to compete for another country; however, when you are a U.S. citizen and compete for a country that has had no input in your development...how can that possibly make sense? When one country brought you into the sport, trained, equipped, financed and provided you with the opportunity display your talent and then another country benefits from that is dishonorable in every way I can think of. - Andres Arroyo's decision to represent PR as opposed to the U.S. will always be part of the discussion no matter what he accomplish and it is a fair discussion.

With all of that said, he is a talented kid and I wish him the best of luck.

And, for anyone to think this young man should not be called out on this is stinking thinking. Bernard Lagat came to the U.S. when he was 18, went to college in the U.S., married an American woman, became a citizen, he is raising his kids in the U.S., has lived in the U.S. longer than he has lived in Kenya, gave Kenya the best years of his career and actually competed for Kenya while technically being a U.S. citizen and he still get flack for not representing Kenya.

This is foolish and one-track (hah) thinking. While PR may not be providing him with tracks and whatever else, what if that is his identity.? What if his friends, family, values, culture and such are distinctly Puerto Rican? if such, it makes NO sense in my eyes for him to run for the USA

He may feel very alienated from American culture and who knows, even may feel resentment toward it.

The idea that you run for who brought you up makes more sense for a runner who actually grew up here, but we don't know how long he's actually been here.
