Really? Why are you so mean to Watchout? What did he do to you? I know he has done a lot for the sport. I guarantee you that those kids would love to compete at NXN. Not because they were forced or coerced into it, rather because they want to compete in a national championship. And yes a statistician can be a good coach. They are a very small school. They have some success. No reason to bash him or his kids.

I know some athletes that chose to compete at FLW because they think it woill be easier to get to nationals than through the NXNNW regional meet.

Whether you like it or not, NXN is the only true style national championship. There is a competitive individual championship amongst a competitive team championship.

How they did in college does not reflect how they are in high school. The meets in question are high school championships, not freshman in college championships.

It's showing that Foot Locker gets higher caliber talent and better prepares runners for the next level.

Thanks for the support, but this is Letsrun so I kind of expect plenty of people to be disrespectful of others. I don't really care if someone takes shots at me, but it is ridiculous that they would take shots at kids I help coach or the success they've had (or not had) while I've been there. Especially when they know nothing of the background information of the kids - and probably meets they attend - to judge in any way what they accomplish.

For the record, I'm not the head coach at my school, and through the years I've helped out (2006+) I've had varying influence on how the kids are trained (some years I've helped a decent amount in what the head coach has had the kids do, others I didn't have time to discuss training with him and played more of a moral support role for the kids at their meets, while other years I've had kids that I've trained directly). I don't think I've done a bad job in the roles I've been put in, and I don't think the kids would have anything bad to say about me either. For trolls on letsrun, I don't expect them to understand because either they've never been a coach before, have had no experience with me in person, or because they say what they say simply because that's the crap they want to say on a message board.

A championship isn't won by talent alone. And neither meet is preparing runners for the next level. Their high school coach prepares them to race well in high school and helps drive the dream of the future. Once they are in college, their college coach is responsible for them. The college coach is preparing them for NCAAs if they made it. Some runners dont have the same success in college. Is that their high school coaches fault? No.

In the end, they are both a meet at the end of a season. A high school season.

No- People hate watering down existing, true national championships.The best runner in the nation for any given year has yet to win NXN and not Footlocker. Yes, even Derrick.Eliminate one or the other. But still have the race at Balboa. The current NXN curse is retarded.

I'm curious as to why Nike doesn't hold the meet on a nicer golf course down the Columbia Gorge. Go to Hood River down the road. Amazing golf course, by one of the tallest falls in the west and amazing views of Mt. Hood.

watchout is a decent stats guy but takes the fame that gives him as some sort of carte blanche to serve as an expert on other matters such as coaching. He is nothing as a coach and when he starts spouting off on such matters it is only fair to bring reality to the situation. No one, and I mean NO ONE, goes to FL West because it is easier than NXN. Hardy won NXN NW and while a good runner, would not have a chance at winning FLW. Athletes who go to FLW over NXN do so simply becasue San Diego trumps Portland. It's worth the risk of not going to Portland to try to have a better trip.

If watchout wants to pretend he is a coach of any merit he can step up and coach himself a team or individuals that actually are considerations in this discussion. That is not a slam against kids. Lots of kids have bad coaches (or two). It's not their fault.

First of all, I am not Watchout and would never claim to be. Too much respect for the guy.

Secondly, I am no way affiliated with Nike. I was just saying what I witnessed.

I just like good racing. Both meets are great and I support them both. I just believe in time NXN will come out on top. Not because of a superior experience, but because of the format of a true national championship (team and individual).

Footlocker always has a team race along with the individual races. There are 4 teams, consisting of the top 10 individuals from each region, South, Northeast, Midwest, and West.

LOL! I did not know I considered myself an expert on "other matters such as coaching". I do consider myself a student of the sport, and have tried to learn from a great deal of sources that I respect, but never have I claimed to be as wise or as good of coaches as they would are, nor claim that I would even for certain be better as a coach than other coaches even in my own area of the state or in distance-weak areas around the nation. Point to any post where I've claimed to be any sort of expert on coaching, please.

And I also don't see how I started "spouting off on such matters" by simply saying that some of the kids I've helped coach went to this meet and that this is what they thought of the course.

Furthermore, I think it's hilarious that you can pretend like it takes a bad coach to not get their kids in consideration for a spot at nationals. With so many thousands of schools around the nation, you must think there are A LOT of "bad coaches" out there. "Decent" must only cover the top 0.3%. Competing for a team of strangers in a single meet is much different than competing with people who you have been training with for years. These kids get to compete for their school. Way different than saying they compete for the West, Midwest, etc.

As long as both companies fully support the events, they will both continue to be successful. There are far too many great runners to think only one can succeed. The only downside is that you will never have a true national champion again as long as the athletes are split up.
