Oh, and the guy who ran 9:24 as a freshman - that is freaking awesome.

Gotcha.
"Over the years we've seen some very promising talent. However, not everyone pans out." made me think you were asking about what your starting times were, what your expectations were based on that, and what you eventually did. To eventually determine who didn't pan out.
I like that idea too, actually.

Ran all 8 seasons, was as dedicated as anyone else on the team (Won hardest worker on team award by coach), was never sidelined by injury, and had a amazing, supportive coach whose produced some great runners over the years. I just could never really come out that triangle mentally I guess and could never really get it together on game day. Everyone, including coach/teammates sort of scratched their heads, but no one ever really confronted how much of a disappointment I really was in person. Was 6-7 man on varsity all 4 years.

How great were the runners he produced? It's really hard to believe he was a great coach. Certainly didn't have what you needed.
Even an average coach should be able to make a 5:40 freshman into a 4:40 senior, right? Assuming you didn't have a serious drinking problem or an undiagnosed medical condition.

In my humble opinion, he was a fantastic coach and a genuinely good person. He specialized in turning 17:30 freshman into 15:45 seniors
Now there may be a tautology, but I ran in a very slow region in a traditionally under performing state, so that may have had something to do with me sucking so much? I have never had a substance abuse problem ever and never drank in highschool, and I was never seriously ill in high school either. I just had a lot of meltdowns during races and got super nervous before races and had a horrible competition outlook and couldn't push myself during races. And it is disappointing because my coach told me my freshman year that I could be one of the best runners in the state. He probably told everyone that, but still, it was very disappointing.
^^Dude, no offense to you or your coach, but 17s to 15s over 3 seasons is kind of supposed to happen if you have an even remotely decent coach. Your freshman times weren't absolutely abysmal, especially if you were new to the sport. Also,
As for me, didn't run XC fall of my freshman year, warmed the bench of the JV football team.

Not sure what happened to the rest of my text after "also" above, but yeah, your freshman times weren't abysmal, and no offense, but I've never heard of anyone, at least in high school, muddling through seasons in good faith like that before. I am willing to bet that you did not have nearly enough aerobic base, and your volume didn't increase sufficiently over the years.

Just going to throw Kevin Sullivan out there. Ran 3:53 (1500) and 1:51 (800) at age 13. That's got to be somewhere on the list.
Dustin Horter from Lakota East in 2014 as a freshman ran a 15:42 cross country 5k and ran 9:13 3200m at States. As a sophmore this year he ran a 15:21.....
I think Cole Johnson ranks well in this.

Me I ran 4:41 in 8th grade in 1600 and my friend was right next to me but i sprinted in the last 200 meters of the lap and one him. He got a impressive time of 4:53 though am proud of him and myself because the guy in 3rd got 6:02.
