Will the NCAA sanctions affect all athletes at PSU?

As its name implies Penn State is a creature of the State of Pennsylvania. Yet the state seems to be content to allow the NCAA to make policy as regards the disposition of the football team, and as a by-product the rest of the athletic department. The state needs to replace the entire board of trustees, and make a clear statement as to the future role that football (and other sports which have been potentially harmed as innocent bystanders) plays at the university. Not to say the NCAA actions are uncalled for, but it just seems odd that they are taking the lead. I don't believe that NCAA can in fact set the budget priorities of what is really a state institution. This ultimately is up to the state legislature. It would be nice to see them man up and forthrightly support the non-football sports.

I have a hard time seeing how this works. Admittedly I have no idea how funding is distributed, accounted, covered up, etc. at a major university, but I can try and relate it to my household finances. If the law came to me and said I had to pay $30000 a year in fines for some sort of thing I did but yet my wife still would spend the same amount on her dresses, groceries, and toys for the kids that she always had, how would that really be possible?

The bowl revenue is on top of the $60 million. They will pay the $60 million over 5 years and then have to forfeit ~$13 million in BCS/Bowl revenue for 4 years. This totals $25 million for 4 years and then $12 million for the 5th year. The annual revenue of the athletic department was $116 million in 2011. So $25 million is 22% of that budget. Plus it is unknown how this would affect Nittany Lion Club donations or TV revenues or other revenues.

The academic side will NOT pay for this. It will be fully funded by the athletic department. The athletic department 1) has some reserves saved up, 2) they have some capital projects that they can put on hold, 3) as a worst case scenario they would borrow money from the school and pay it back at a pre-determined interest rate. These 3 methods for dealing with the decreased revenue was detailed by the acting AD at the 5:25 mark of the following interview today:

That doesn't mean they are ACTUALLY attending class. Penn State is well-known for being a diploma mill. Play football, you get a degree.

My PSU friends always told me many of the gen-ed classes were a joke. The class sizes are so massive that professors really can't stop cheating and the tests are multiple choice which don't do a very good job at testing a student's knowledge of the subject.

This isn't really a knock on PSU, though. I expect this sort of thing at all huge universities

The NCAA sanctions against PSU football will not have any negative effect whatsoever on the other PSU sports. In fact, the sanctions will have little financial effect on the football team itself, nor will the economy of Happy Valley suffer.

Granted, there will be lost revenue related to the post-season ban, but that's about it. The $60MM fine? Pfft...Wealthy alumni will have that knocked out in a week. And the quality of the product on the field won't matter either. Ask anyone who's ever been there, Saturday home games in Happy Valley will be no different than they've ever been. Beaver Stadium will still cram in 107K-plus fans, and the tailgate lots will still be filled with drunk hillbillies n'at.

Yes, the sanctions will hurt PSU football from a competitive standpoint and bruise some egos, but no other PSU sports programs nor the community at large will suffer significant financial loss.

Do you really think the figures would change? There has only been one graduating class since then. Penn State has always been rank one of the highest when it comes to graduating players. Let's not think everything Paterno did was evil.

To All Penn State Track and Field/Cross Country Team Members, Alumni, Fans, and Friends –

The results of today’s NCAA sanctions on the Penn State football program and Penn State University have a significant impact on the university and athletic department. Although, these may be interpreted as harsh and severe, one must remember the issues that have brought us to this point. After lengthy departmental meetings today, I am confident in Penn State’s ability to sweep this under the rug and pretend it never happened. Support for our program of track and field and cross country will be maintained at the high level we know to keep us competitive within the Big Ten and NCAA even without money from the cash-cow almmighty football team. This was demonstrated to the coaches through President Emmert and the Penn State athletic and university leadership.

I am confident that in lieu of these penalties, positive change and great success will be achieved.

All of us must interpret and digest the events of the last eight months, but as a unit, we must choose to move forward in a positive and productive manner. No more molesting children in the showers, effective, sometime soon. I ask from each of you to stay the course and believe our best is yet to come. I have been and continue to be honored to serve at this fine institution of enablers and molester and this amazing athletic department and this outstanding track and field/cross country program.

Class time was basically nappy time in the back row for football players in my classes. They have mandatory study hall hours "help" them on homework, quizzes, and exams.

I'm sure if the wrestling team has to take cuts at PSU I'm sure these guys would gladly walk on and whoop some D-1 asses fo free.
