Agree. Across the mile, 3000 and 5000, I certainly can't remember any single day of collegiate running to match this one... my memory bank goes back to about 1980.

Also big congratulations to Lagat and Rupp on their ARs. Pretty weird that they both gained and lost an AR on the same day.

I predict the first time Rupp ever gets drunk is the day of Lagat's retirement.

What a shame for Derrick. He deserves many championships. He'll always be number one in my book.

I have nothing against Lagat, Lalang, Cheserek, etc. it's just disappointing to see them take down the records. I have no animosity but maybe some of you understand what I mean or how I feel...

I think that this is a cogent comment worthy of further consideration. I think that it is fully worthwhile to compare Rupp's 8:09 with Bekele's 8:04WR. The year that KB ran that time ('08), he ran 26:25 under not particularly optimal conditions. I think that it is not at all out of the realm of possibility to extrapolate that Rupp will be capable of 26:40 fitness or better this summer (although getting in a fast race is another thing entirely). This positions him within striking distance of a medal, if he can somehow muster the kind of closing speed necessary. Certainly 26:30 is within his scope in the next few years, considering his development curve.

Obviously you DO have something against all those guys. It's a college record, not the american record. Besides, those guys have legs just like Rupp and Derrick do. They've put in the work and deserve their results without scrutiny. Heck, they might even deserve it MORE than Derrick. He has probably had a much easier and laid back life.

I totally understand what people like you feel about these things. It's sad that you and others of your ilk feel that way.
