Chocolate Milk vs. Gatorade/Powerade/etc.

Skim milk with Ovaltine. Best chocolate milk there is.

Gatorade, and most sports drinks these days, are NOT sweetened with HFCS. At least not since sometime in the early 2000s. Gatorade is now sweetened with a sucrose/glucose blend.

The problem with consuming fat post-workout it that it slows the absorption of other nutrients (namely carbs and protein).

Your post run recovery should depend on the type of workout performed....

1. Regular Run: You need water. If a long run you'll need carbs as well. If a really long run then the electrolytes in gatorade become beneficial.

2. Long run or hard workout: Again water. Carbs and Protein as well.

Runners tend to underestimate the need for protein post-workout. Consume more protein and your recovery will thank you for it.

If you're looking to save money on a recovery drink and think switching to chocolate milk is a good idea...don't. You're better of just drinking water. If you want a good recovery drink then spend the money on a good one.

Why not eat real food and drink water for recovery. Why buy potions?

I am pretty sure most American runners are not lacking in any of the dietary requirements needed for recovery. I find it comical that you would spend 50 bucks on some tub of powder that has mystical healing properties. If you want to recover after a workout eat real food. I imagine the list of credible peer reviewed sport nutrition research papers is probably in the single digits.

Nothing compares to Brawndo--it's got electrolytes.

I like how you differentiate between easy runs and long runs/workouts. For easy runs, I usually just drink water (before and after) and some diluted gatorade. If I am doing something harder, I use endurox. Does this make sense to you?

Also, What about fruit smoothies? Maybe w/ protein powder as you described.

As far as "potions" go. People buy protein supplements for convenience. Nothing more. It's not magical, just convenient.

Muscle Milk is loaded with fat and calories and is terrible for you...loaded with heavy metals.

What I started doing is mixing a half scoop of whey protein with 24 oz. of Gatorade after my harder/longer runs.

Gatorade 03 (specifically for recovery) now has the whey protein in it. I drink it, and it's not bad.

I don't like milky Gatorade. I'd rather just drink milk (skim milk) after a workout.

That's simply a personal opinion. It Sucks, terrible. Friend brought some to a race and we tried it afterwards and both hated it. But like I said it's only a personal opinion.

The point of the LA USDA to vote on excluding chocolate milk is because for a kid sitting in school. Chocolate milk or flavored milk that is served in school has more sugar than soda does.

For a runner who had just burned xxx calories running this is great along with the protein. However for a kid sitting in kids and if you have looked at the rest of the food that the la county produces is crap and has little nutriontal value. Its a victory in trying to improve the health of the kids in the district.

Probably is the key word there....prove it.

Gatorade 03 is definitely not for everyone. I don't mind it. I just can't get skim milk down after a workout. Wish I could, but just doesn't sit well.
