Only sub-27 is world class? That's a small class. (Two last year.) And fewer than a dozen others ran faster than 27:24 last year.
I'm guessing that he's not looking to change anything about his coaching right now.
His name is Bobby Curtis. This name is too main stream for weird runner types. We think of him as normal and therefore cannot relate. Just look how Tim Nelson doesn't get any props. Too normal name. Also, more importantly we like runners we've been watching since high school.

Bobby is one of the most talented and hard working athletes out there. It's great to see him crushing it like he is. He doesn't need people's recognition. He will make them take notice. He has done it before and he sure as heck will continue to do it.

So true. Curtis was a HUGE runner early on. He was one of the best sophmores in HS ever if i remember correctly...maybe a 4:08 mile or something?
You would consider this a world class effort ? Come on , perfect night , perfect conditions , no racing , no surges , no field , he should run fast. Not to take way from the fine effort , it does not translate in my opinion to world class athlete. How did he do at world cross ?
Talk a little about his european racing last summer if you would please.

I agree with you ScottyT. I think Americans are beginning to see new possibilities after what CS did last year. I will not be surprised if another American runs sub 27 this year. Probably Rupp. Now on college level, what do you think of Stephen Sambu and Leonard Korir. Sambu missed Samuel Chelanga's collegiate record by a whisker and Korir was just a few strides back. I never thought collegiate running would get this far. What ya'll say?

30-something years ago, Rono and Kimobwa were better than Sambu and Korir are today, and probably better than Chelanga is (yeah, Kimobwa "only" ran 27:30, but he set a world record with that time). Imagine what Rono could have done in a setting like last year's Payton Jordan meet (or even this year's meet) instead of blasting out that many world records while being way out in front the entire way.
Having said that, it's true college running as a whole is as good as it's ever been. There are still too many American collegians who only show competitive grit in rabbited races and perfect weather and aren't as good at championship races in tougher conditions. But the overall quality of college running is so high that this flaw only shows up in a relatively minor way, except in international competition. That's the only way I think the college guys of the late 1970s were better than today's guys. More of them could set their own pace - they usually had to, or at least share the pace, if they wanted to run fast - and were just as tough and reliable in bad weather or tactical races with lots of surges as they were in ideal weather with a fast frontrunner pulling them along.

To be put it into context it's 4 seconds faster than our Mo Farah has run (& although he has more emphasis on the 5 I would say he is training for both). Also only 2 seconds slower than Ritz
For all of you right there! Bobby is the smartest runner in USA who thinks long-term. As someone who follows Bobby since high school, I would go "all in" that Bobby is winning Olympic trails and placing high at Olympics. Marcus did not train him hard in college and Bobby's batteries will last way longer than Wisconsin guys' or Mr. Rupp's. Bobby should be AMERICA'S RUNNING ICON as someone who was HS National Champion, went to running traditional college like Villanova, became NCAA champ with a sleeping disorder, and so far with a very sucesful pro career. All that without altitute tents, NIKE facilities and MEDIA support. Not even mentoining that Bobby pretty much coaches himself. LETS RUN, let's start giving this guy more publicity b/c he deserves it more so than NIKE studs dominated by true American name Bobby Curtis. Once times comes for Bobby to run marathon - bye bye Ryan Hall!

I don't know if this post was supposed to be serious or not.
1st- Clearly Bobby is incredibly talented. I remember when he was a sophomore and ran (I think) at the time what was pretty close to or was a sophomore record. I would guess he hadn't been training more then a year or 2, and ran 4:08 or whatever. That is pure talent. He is as talented as Solinsky and Rupp
2nd- I am a big supporter and believer in Bobby (see previous post), but to say he will be better then Rupp or the Wisconsin guys is ludicrous. I have no idea what the future will hold for Solinsky, Teg, Rupp... they may have relatively short careers (thought Teg and Solinsky are now verging on already having long('ish) careers) but I would rather run 26:59 and 12:55 and be done by 30 then 27:10 and 13:05 and be done at 35. Who cares about longevity. The goal is to get as fast as possibly, not to be pretty good for as long as possible. Not saying that Curtis won't run really fast, just saying that running fast in your mid-early late 20s isn't a bad thing. I'm sure Alan Webb is happier with his 3:46 at 25 or whatever he was at the time then having a slow progression until his early 30s that eventually got him down to 3:48 or 3:49.
3rd- He doesn't coach himself. And if he did, how is that a good thing? You need a coach and rather then trumpet that as a positive, you should recognize that not having one will eventually hurt him relative to his nearly equally talented and driven peers.
