Good Point- Middle distance is more than the mile, but I suspect he would be pretty darn good from 600 meters to 8000, not the best like the title of the thread implies, but ranked for sure.

Since the record's under 4, why is 4:19 such an outstanding time.
Maybe because you can't run under 4:40 indoors

What is his indoor 400 and 800 meter time?
He is not entered in masters indoors this year.
His 800 is probably better than mine, that is for sure!
He does not seem to run it much. I bet he could get down to 1:56 by summer if he continues to improve like he is.

Seriously? That seems such a shame. I'd love to see him throw down at that meet too.
at the risk of immodesty and/or perceived jealousy, yes, there are guys that COULD beat him. and i'm one of them:) however, at the risk of perceived false modesty, neither of us come close to the wonders that are tony young or jim sorensen or john hinton. i hate to say it, but 4:19 really ain't that fast--it's pretty common for a few masters to hover around 4:19-4:23 most years. he may be the fastest right now, but if 4:19 stands as the best indoor mark by a master this year, it's a pedestrian year.
to compare: john hinton, at 45, ran a 4:20 indoors at hartshorne--i think his best indoors is 4:13 as a master. sorensen ran 4:17 at hartshorne at 41; tony young, 4:20 at 43 at hartshorne (he ran a 4:05!!!! indoors as a master, i think on an oversized 300m track, back in 2005, and 4:13 at 45, i think on the same track).
kern is undoubtedly very good, and it's great to see new blood in masters track. should he break 4:15 indoors, i'll be the first one to start a thread heralding him as the best, and "best" would actually mean something. until then, we're all hacks relative to young/sorensen/hinton.
that's my story and i'm sticking to it...
Whatever you call it, someone who can run 4:19 definitely belongs in a national masters champ race with all the guys who can run 4:15-ish
Watch out for Tony this year. He had one of his best XC finishes ever at Club Nats.
Indoors, sub 4:20s are VERY rare every year in the US based on these rankings...

The names that CCM lists are certainly among the best in recent years, but there is no doubt that Charlie belongs in the discussion with them.
Charlie ran 3:53.58 1500m last spring.....

Charlie is a Sweet Home High School graduate and ran at Kentucky. Coached at York (IL) with Newton. NY state champ in the mile in high school, team champs in XC, 2x Kinney XC qualifier. Also, a really nice guy. Glad to see him competing in his 40s.
Small correction, Kern only qualified once for Kinney Nationals - in '86.
Interestingly, a contemporary of Kern's was also in the mile race the other night - none other than John Trautmann.
also sub-4 miler tom nohilly...
Meet results or link?

He should enter his time for the rankings list.
Not to get too far off subject but just looking at the current records for M 50-54 it looks like there are at least 3 outdoor records in range for Magill and maybe 2 indoor WR's The toughest one might be that 14:53 but I bet with a few pacemakers he can take it down.
I think that Jesus Boreggo turns 50 this summer maybe, so he may go after the 1500 and Mile records too, and then of course next year Tony Young and so on and so on...

Nope!
I am not sure how old Scott Weeks is (Syracuse Chargers), but he seems to always run right around 1:55 in the 800. He must be around 40 years old.
Is that not near the top?
OK. If you say so. Doesn't matter to me really, I just think he may be capable of it.
