Master G, I am with you, when you organize something like that it has to take time out of training. At least I don't have snow to deal with.

Here's how my week went down:
1/23 - 1 hr 40 min in the am
1/24 - am 30 min, pm 62 min progression run; push ups and core work
1/25 - am 30 min, weights, squats/lunges, core work
1/26 - push ups, core work, pm 60 min run
1/27 - am 30 min, weights, squats/lunges, core work; pm 60 min
1/28 - am 30 min, push ups and core work; pm 74 min steady run, did a bit of miscalculating in my head running a rolling loop in a local park and thought I was running around 8.5 or 9 miles when it actually turned out to be 10. Did my last loop of the park at 6:40 pace, but other than that, it was all steady and very comfortable.
1/29 - am weights, 34 min run; pm squats/lunges, core works, 68 min run
Weekly totals were 11 sessions for a total of 70 miles.
Overall, I'm starting to feel fit and I'm feeling energetic and motivated most days. I'm looking forward to this local 5k in a 2 weeks if for nothing else to give myself a little trial and have the basis to assess where I'm at.
What's my motivation? To see after 20 years if I've still got it. I might not get there, but I'll enjoy the journey nonetheless.
Have a great week all!
Happy end of Jan old crappers. Hope y'all east coasters are finding ways to keep fit. I know Anselm Lebourne is as he broke the AR in the M50 800 Sat - 1:59.9 something. Me? Happy to debut at 2:08 indoor for M50. Keep dreaning about Sacramento everyone.
KP
Nice run, KP, ESPECIALLY on the insane track at UP (which is not "oval" by any stretch of the imagination!)
I got in 66 miles with one day off. Workouts of 6 x 3:00 at 5k/10k pace and drills/strides. Weather finally turned to what most people associate with Hotlanta. Lots of 50 and 60 degree days and it hit 70 on Saturday! Have a great week everybody!
53 miles/6 days.
Mon ~ 0 miles/rest
Tue ~ 7mi EZ
Wed ~ 9mi hilly
Thur ~ 7 mi w/ 3xmile 5:54,5:58,5:51 w/1 min Rjog
Fri ~ 6mi Ez
Sat ~ 6 miles w 3 mile up-tempo (18:34)
Sun ~ 18 miles hilly
motivation for me came in threes:
1) dave olds, as a master, kicking my ass when i was around 35, at mt. sac in a coaches' race AFTER he'd already run an open race, both times significantly faster than mine, then years later getting the invitation to join his fluffy bunnies.
2) pete magill kicking my ass in 2007 when i turned 40. and in 2008. and in 2009. and in 2010. and in 2011.
3) ceci st. geme (we both coach in orange county) inviting me out to calcoast workouts. training with adults for the first time (about 3 years ago) after nearly 20 years of running with high school kids. i meet every tuesday night--i may have missed a handful over the last 3 years--with bill sumner's group for tempo runs or trackwork. that workout motivates me to train well the rest of the week so i can come back the next tuesday even stronger.
so, the moral of the story: no man is an island.... find somebody/somebodies to train with, even if it's once a week or so, and that may be enough to motivate you the rest of the time when no one's looking.
on that note, if i run in san diego this weekend like i did three years ago, i hope no one's looking...
Snow/ice is a recurrent theme for most of the country this winter. I caved in to the siren call of X-C skiing back in the early 70's. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Wisconsin winters offer tons of white stuff, and thousands of miles of sinuous trails. The break from running and the huge engine skiing generated, was a plus during my 20's and remains so today.
Motivation; A day without a run/ski is as bleak as a day without sunshine.( and we've had plenty of those since Nov.)
The workout is my anti depressant and mood balancer. That's the motivation scenario on a positive note.
If that's not sufficient, a quick review of our family's proclivity to drop dead of a massive coronary event somewhere between 50-65 yo, seals the deal.
The week past featured 3 short runs(25-40 mins.) and 3 long ski outings; 1.5+1.75+3.5 hours= 6.25 hours. The 3.5 was on the Birke trail and felt so good. Any one of you folks get to Northern WI, you owe it to yourself to bike/run/ski this musically flowing glacial rollercoaster.
great to recap everyone's week. Hotlanta maybe as far away as Australia with those 70's F.
Well, Dallas, brace yourselves, the advance guard of Cheeseheads are enroute! Go Packers!
Hello,
Better late than never. I managed just over 40 miles in the first full week since I stupidly strained some muscles in my right leg playing volleyball. my groin and piriformis are still not 100%, but quads felt pretty good in a 5k evaluation run on Tuesday (~18) and in a 4 mile tempo on Saturday (~23). I'll try some 800s at 3k pace on Tuesday.
Good luck to those of you running in San Diego or Melbourne. The field at Melbourne looks small this year, with Mark Andrews and Lori Kingsley looking like the ones to beat.
My motivation to run is simple: I don't want to return to the lifestyle I had before running. I don't want to smoke, drink, get fat, and wake up in the morning wondering if this is the day I die from smoking, drinking, and being fat.
It's not as easy as it sounds. I actually liked the smoking, drinking, and overeating. I liked the parties most every night. I liked looking out at the pouring rain and thinking, Hey, I don't have to run in this crap.
But I only liked little pieces of that life, and only liked them in the moment. It was like admiring one nice tree while the forest all around was in flames.
My other motivation is the people I've gotten to know and run with in this sport. The SoCal Cushes and David Oldses and all the Aggies, Harriers, Track Clubers, Northwesters, etc. that I wouldn't know otherwise. I keep training so that I keep having a reason to hang with them.
But that's tough too. Six months away from 50, the body has its own ides about what I should be doing. 9 out of 10 days something is on the verge of going drastically wrong - some injury in the making or chronic pain issue or weird fatigue syndrome. It's why I don't post much anymore. Because while I still run fast, the truth is that outside those one in ten days when I'm running well, I'm acting my age by feeling like crap. And no one likes a whiny winner.
Okay, I'll see some of you in San Diego. I'm very fit, but I also couldn't run faster than 8 minute per mile pace for most of last week because of a groin/thigh strain. So it goes. ;-)
Greetings, most of the week spent in very cold upstate Michigan - Traverse City, Gaylord. Never got above 18 degrees, so ran the treadmill daily, a few doubles. Can't wait to be outdoors again, but starting Tuesday is Minnesota. Colder.
Drove to Mackinaw Bridge where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron connect, frozen solid, very cool looking (no pun intended). While on the drive, tried to dry my running shorts using the car's heater. Mistake. After 3 runs and a simple rinse, it was clear almost immediately that more cleaning was needed. Oh the humanity!
My motivation is breaking 5 at 55 in the mile and being in good enough race shape to keep up with my little girl.
Good success to everyone in San Diego!!

If you need help post your e-mail up. I work with sub 5 minute master runners.
Motivation - comes & goes at this age. Nice to have something a couple months out to get in some consistency (the key) so I do not get embarrassed. I am as motivated by the folks who lace 'em up each day as I am by those that don't. It's raining, it's cold, it's dark, it's too hot (that happens about twice-a-yr-here!). Love the idea that I got out and worked up a good lather, while others just went home.
75 mile week, minimal soreness.
Mon - indoor workout 2x 400, 800, 2x 400, 800, 2x 400 @ mile pace
Thurs - indoor track 3x 1k, 3x 800, 3x 600, 2x 200 @ 3k pace
The rest is just muddy trails.
Cheers
My motivation when I first started running back in 1975 was simple - to keep weight off. I lost 30 lbs in the 8th grade and went from a fat geek to a semi-normal person. Why did I lose the weight in the first place? I didn't want to go through high school like my two older brothers without a date!
My two older brothers weigh 300+ lbs and have health problems; my Mom died from a lifetime of smoking. The alternative keeps me going.
I continue to run to stay healthy and see friends; I continue to race because I am competitive and want to do my best. I love the feeling after a hard run or workout where I know that I pushed myself.
The most recent motivator is a new age group - I turn 50 in three days. I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do as I pass that milestone. And - I'm feeling better than I have in several years.
76 miles for the week.
Thanks. Appreciate the offer. Fortunately I have some good coaches now and like their approach.
Cheers!
Spot On Big Pete. Love it.
This thread really motivated me today, thought about it during my run and just kept pushing, thanks all !
You may be in for almost the coldest weather in your life in Minnesota this week. It starts about Tuesday night coming down from Yellowknife.
1500 deserves some cold, all that time chillin in Socal in the Oaks while the rest us freeze !
You guys are mean! Treadmill for me. Wednesday is supposed to be -15, coldest for me ever was -25 in Regina, Canada. At least it is 3 days, knowing I will be back at the 'outdoor' BBQ over the weekend sipping something cool and refreshing as I apply the #8 sunscreen.
Regardless, I'll attack the treadmill, take Airborne like crazy, dress warm, and get the job done. Fight on!
