age gaps are worst early and late in life. in the middle phase, you can postpone giving mature, rational consideration of the implications. however, as you approach retirement, children age, health deteriorates, etc, difference of a decade+ cause serious strains on the relationship that you procrastinated to deal with. there's plenty of superb matches for everyone; don't settle for one that meets every criteria except the right generation

Half age + 7 is the main rule
-You can round down on odd years as long as the younger party is not a minor (35 dating 24, fine. 21 dating 17, not fine)
-The younger party cannot be a minor unless the relationship was started at a time when the half age + 7 rule was met and both parties were minors. Only exception is 18 dating 16 when the 18 year old initiates the relationship while still in high school with said 16 year old.

7-8 years isn't that big of a deal, again, depending on the age of both of you. If she's 22 and a brand new graduate and you're 30 with almost of decade of real life experience behind you that she doesn't have yet...that could be an issue.
I'm dealing with that right now. Not so much with life experience (for him), but for being at potentially different stages of our lives.
My boyfriend and I have been dating for just over 2 years and are currently on a break. He just turned 28, and I'm turning 22 this year. While he's in no hurry to settle down (and I'm in even less of a hurry, obviously) he's starting to think that he needs to think about his future, etc. and if this is worth it, while I don't even graduate until next spring -- and I have a lot I want to do with my life and that I maybe can't achieve while in a relationship even though I really love/care about him. The age hasn't really been a factor til now -- I think we're pretty great together -- but I think it may cause problems in the future (well, it already is - like I said, we're on a break to figure things out).
I'm sure he's breathing a sigh of relief now that he's got your approval.
