The Ivies don't necessarily try to match the aid from other schools. I got into Harvard and Dartmouth, Harvard offering me $11,000 [more?] than Dartmouth. We brought it up to the financial aid people at Dartmouth and they said they could not make a better offer, despite that "theory" that all Ivies give the same package to make it more fair to choose amongst them.
Understood. The only Ivy that I *know* has this policy of matching other Ivies' offers is Cornell. Other schools *may* have a similar policy (though it sounds like Dartmouth doesn't, or at least didn't)--I simply don't know.
Some years back, the Ivies (and MIT) had a consortium that met annually, so that applicants to multiple schools would indeed receive similar packages from each. The US nixed this, deeming it a restraint of trade, so now the schools' packages can vary, sometimes widely--as C/M's did.
