24 mpg is not enough. I drive about 800 to 1200 miles a week. I need very good gas mileage with gas prices going through the roof. I am thinking the TDI will last longer then a standard engine.
You'll get way more than 24mpg if you do that much highway driving. I have a '09 Passat and get 31 mpg combined driving 40,000 miles a year on the same gas engine as I think you get in the Jetta Sportwagen. I do about 80/20 highway vs. city miles.
I put 393,000 miles on my '99 Passat (gas engine), and although it had some funny electrical issues it was a very reliable vehicle. The CEL was always going on and off, the sunroof didn't always close when you wanted it to, but it was all minor stuff, and kind of endearing. Loved that car. It averaged 30.3 mpg over its lifetime.
The diesel would be even better. I had a diesel Sportwagen pre-ordered way before they first came out in '09, but ended up not taking delivery. I went with another Passat because I wanted something a little larger and the Passat also has a much better seat for long distance driving. Otherwise, I loved everything about the Sportwagen. Wish I could get a diesel Passat Wagon.
