To those that suggest a different car.. be specific what car and model ?

Toyotas have ZERO steering feel, no fun to drive. Hondas aren't that bad, but I love my 2004 Jetta GLI VR6. Love that car.

Is yours diesel ? what kind of mpg ?

I have a 2010 Jetta TDI and I love it. I get over 50 mpg on the highway, but I probably average 35 on my commute through the city. Highly recommend it.

This actually a pretty useful way to approach car buying.

When you have cash, they like the ease of the sale but there is no incentive for a discount becase there is no back end gain for them.

People with bad credit are a headache because they get excited and go all the way throught the process to find out at the end they don't qualify. And the sales person wasted their time.

But if you do qualify for financing, they have room to discount the car a bit because they can make up the difference with finance charges...if you finance with them.

You could go as far as actually financing it with them and then paying it in full on the first payment to avoid almost all of the interest charges.

If you go to any of the VW TDI forums you'll see talk of problems with the high pressure fuel pump on the Jetta/Golf TDI. The pump "grenades" and sends metal fragments throughout the fuel system. The biggest gripe I've read is that VW has made it difficult to obtain warranty coverage by blaming the problem on bad fuel, and the repair is big $$$. Frankly it wouldn't dissuade me from buying a TDI, but you might at least familiarize yourself with the issue. I think the problem was mostly with the earlier builds of the current TDI iteration. Evidently it's a pretty rare problem, and the perception is that the pump manufacturer (Bosch I believe?) has made some change in manufacturing to correct it.

My daughter drives an 03 Passat (1.8L turbo), which will hit 100K miles in the next few months. With one exception (failed ignition coil pack, covered under recall) it has been very dependable. I enjoy driving it.

Thanks for sharing that issue with me. I just got home from test driving and loved the TDI and the gas engine. Funny thing though the gas Jetta Sportswagen was more expensive then the TDI because of the navigation system and the sun roof which were not on the TDI. I could care less about those two items. I think I will buy the TDI. Now the hard part..what color ?

I see more German cars dead on roadsides than any other make. Seems like every other day there is some dude in an Audi standing outside of his car with his shades on & on his cell calling for a tow truck. Stay away from German cars.

One more thing, talk to a Euro mechanic & ask him how long of a wait it'll be to get a vehicle in for repairs. Months.

No mine is not Diesel, Mine is a 6 cylinder so gas mileage isn't exactly a highlight.

What you need to do get the best deal is to shop around at least 3/4 different dealers, and get them to blow out their prices.

Oh yeah and all of the back end products like warranties and stuff is highly negotiable also.

I was stunned that the dealer did not pressure at all. I told them up front I wasn't buying today and they were totally fine. They did say that since there isn't a huge inventory of these cars that they don't budge much off the price. I guess I will walk in at the end of the month and see what I can do to get a good price.

The other VW dealer in the area has a horrible reputation and its almost like the decent dealership knows it and can charge a bit more. Any advice or insight you have as a car salesman would be appreciated.

Korean and Ford cars are crap. Buy Honda, Toyota, and Subaru. Toyota just announced an all-electric car with battery and car parts free of rare-earth metals which leapfrogs Nissan and Tesla.

Ford & Hyundai are rapidly on the rise & you can still get them for cheap unlike Toyota.

current Ford & Hyundai = Toyota & Honda in glory days of the 80s.
