The guy is giving up his job as a managing director to do this stunt. If he had simply kept his job for those 10 months and given only half his salary to charity, that would be more than $15K.
He'll probably spend >$15K just traveling to all these countries over the next 10 months.
This is just a publicity stunt in the name of charity. It's good that it'll mean $15K for charity, but it'd be naive to not see through what he's doing.
His PR is 1:58 which is about 9:00 pace which indicates he hasn't trained much. It sounds more like he's financing time off from work and a world-wide tour by doing these races in the name of charity.
Maybe there's more to the story than this, but from the article, that's what I see as the reality of the matter.
