Some states like Wisconsin have roster limits and a 4:28 miler wouldn't make some of the states D3 teams where everyone is non-scholarship = walk-ons.
Then why does Lacrosse have plenty of guys well over 4:30?

Who are the "plenty of guys well over 4:30" that have made the team? Last I heard a 1:52 guy didn't make the team in cross. I believe this kid was also like 4:17.
Actually according to Villanova's website, the women's 1600 walk on standard is 5:10 and 800 is 2:18 (not 5:20 and 2:20 like the poster posted), which makes them pretty on par.
I don't get these standards.
I ran against Villanova often and was in their region. I consistently beat their entire top 7 in cross and couldn't hit one of their walk on standards in high school.
