That is compensated for the smaller amount of field that the ball has to fall in in order to earn a base hit. Hitting in the two sports is comparable.

I do agree that the win streaks can't be compared, they are different sports. If a comparison is to be made though, UCLA >>>> UCONN

You hit the nail on the head. You can't compare the two streaks for the same reason you can't compare a high school winning streak to a college winning streak or a college winning streak to a pro winning streak. UConn is the best college womens basketball team period. To take anything away from that is blind denial, but to add anything further to the record is just as foolish.

The major reason I insulted you was that your supposed streak would be in college, Joe D's streak was in the pros. Very different level of competition, not even close to comparable.

Just think how amazing Joe D's streak is for a second. Just think of the amazing, hall of fame hitters that have come through the majors and not one has come within 10 games of it. And you then suggest that a collegiate softball player matching or exceeding it is more impressive? I hope you can see why I overreacted before.

While I think the UConn streak is amazing, I don't see how it can compare to UCLA's.

I find it hilarious that they are somehow 'victims' now. The head coach in his press conference, and this morning on ESPN I think it was one of the Assist Coach who commented something about now something positive about the women's game can be reported on, instead of something negative.....what!?!

I'm going to clue you in for a moment .... Uh, no women's professional softball. The very best players are in the college game, and in fact have had fewer years to perfect skills, so the comparison might be better than you think.

Yes, there is an AAU type adult fast pitch which is more ODP than anything else, but select teams are so stacked that it essentially becomes the Globetrotters against the Generals ... can't really compare. Even still in either arena, to go 56 games would be amazing ... because I firmly believe that the two most amazing records in baseball are Joe D's 56 games and Hack Wilson Driving in 190 runs and 186 runs in two consecutive seasons ... when there were 154 games/season.

And back to the original discussion ... UCLA >>>> UCONN

This is precisely right. NCAA women's basketball has about as much in common with NCAA men's basketball as NCAA women's soccer or lax does. They are 2 completely different sports and shame on the media for giving that windbag the forum to even imply that UConn's record somehow is more impressive than UCLA's.

To all who are trying to compare NCAA Men's and Women's basketball now:

Yeah, there are some HUGE differences.

But how come nobody seems to realize that NCAA Men's basketball was WAY different when UCLA made their streak.

I'm not saying they should be compared any more than Favre vs. Ripken should be compared, but ESPN seems to think that stuff like that's ok, so why not this?

Is the streak impressive? Yes, BUT

The difference between the top 2-3 women's teams and the rest of the teams in the country is HUUUGGGGGEEEEEEEE thats why women's teams always go undefeated and win the NCAA championship.

For mens teams it isn't unusual for a top 15 team to be fairly comparable to the top 3. It is super rare for a mens team go undefeated.

In 20-30 years the talent in women's basketball will be more spread out. Then if a team did this, it would be unbelievable.

Until then, its going to be teams like stanford, tennessee and uconn.

A 56 game hit streak for a collegiate woman softball player would be over the course of two seasons. At a legitimate top 10 school in the country at least 10-20 of the games would be against teams with vastly inferior talent. Even if some pro teams aren't as good they are still pulling some of the very best the country has to offer. That is why college and pro can't be compared, even if there is no pro league for women.

By the way, everyone is ignoring the fact that the Prarie View A&M women's basketball team (I think it was them, anyway) won 130+ games in a row during the 1970's........

No one cares, therfore he is wrong. No one with half a brain compares his streak with UCLA's. They're different sports and different era's. Uconn owns the women's consecutive win streak, great, but who gives a f***. UCLA owns the men's streak, great too, and actually this isn't a big deal either. He is also completely paranoid and wrong if he thinks anyone out there is "angry" about Uconn's streak, to be angry one has to give a f*** (the them of my post), and we don't give a f*** so how could we be angry.

Side note: Any average boys HS team would crush UCONN's womens team, I know it has nothing to do with his "look at me" rant, but it's the truth.

UConn call make me care when they beat Waylan Baptist's Women's Basketball teams 131 straight wins (1953-1958). This was back when women had to compete at AAU level. Against semi-pro teams as well as college teams. They won 4 national titles in a row during the streak.

Also, from Norman Chad "It would be curious if Auriemma and Calhoun flopped coaching positions. I doubt Auriemma could ever win 88 in a row with the guys, but I'm reasonably certain Calhoun could put the gals on NCAA probation." :P

The funny thing is that Geno hasn't been comparing the streak to UCLA's or himself to Wooden, it's been all ESPN and sportswriters, he's been pretty reluctant to even talk about it until now. And no where in his recent comments is he saying that his team is more impressive than UCLA or will be if they win tonight. He is lashing out at the media for the same things that you people are, comparing the streaks and belittling his teams accomplishments because a bunch of "miserable bastards" (because they are) don't like the comparisons that they themselves are responsible for making, not Geno or his team.

if the girls could play with guys, they should be treated the same. but they can't so it's not the same. They clearly are getting much more funding than their talents warrant to be flying around the country to all kinds of games when nobody even goes to watch them (thanks Title 9). So they really should shut up and enjoy.

Geno's quote wasn't about women's basketball it was all about him and his legacy. The public will never consider him one of the greatest coaches because he was a man coaching a women's sport (especially since most other NCAA women's coaches are female). He'll never get the recognition he craves so he makes outlandish statements to get PR. And regardless of gender issues, John Wooden's fingernail has more class and character than Geno ever will.

There was nothing outlandish about what he said, he was right and your post and most of the posts in this thread prove it.
