1) People like fictional stories. Among other things, they show the world as people would like it to be. In this case, down-and-out underdog becomes champion and gets the girl through hard work and determination. 2) Rocky was not a distance runner.
Rocky was likely Italian-American, rather than African American, because the author of the screenplay and director of the movie, Sylvester Stallone, who is himself Italian-American, wished to star in it.

perhaps he ran an R-Pace workout on the streets of Philly in 44second 200s and 90 second 400s.
I'm more inspired by Jason Bourne. He knows that at this altitude he can run a 5 minute mile before his hands start shaking. On the beach. Only breathing through his nose.
I don't think I could average 8 min pace for 25 miles if I was bouncing up and down, punching the air every 5 seconds, jumping park benches and accelerating from Daniels E or M pace to an all out sprint in about 2 seconds.
And for most of what they show, he's moving a bit quicker than 8 minute pace, I'd say. Not 6:30s, but not 8s either.
Just watching him train with the Rocky theme music in the background pumps you up.
That movie may have been one the biggest inspirations that really got me to like training and eventually becoming a decent runner.
Running the streets. Sprinting up the Art Museum steps. Hitting the bag. Doing the sit ups while being hit in the stomach.

Not only that but it has some awesome quotes in the movies. For instance in Rocky 4 he is getting ready to go to Russia to train and Adrian says catches him on the stairs and they start to talk.
At one point she yells "It's suicide. You've seen him, you know how strong he is. You can't win."
He responds with, "Oh, Adrian. Adrian always tells the truth. No, maybe I can't win. Maybe the only thing I can do is just take everything he's got. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that. I don't know."
If that doesn't motivate you before a big race and get you in the proper mindset I don't know what does.

I remember watching the movie in the theater when it came out, in Philly, when I was in high school.
Overall, the movie was very popular in Philly, but during the running scenes, the audience was laughing like it was a comedy, as he was going frame by frame, into very obviously different areas of the city.
The mixture of local accents, places they said they were, and the places the camera indicated they actually were, did not match sometimes, so that got the audience's attention too. 34 years ago, different neighborhoods in Philly had noticeably different accents, something that Stallone, whose family was from Philly, apparently couldn't detect himself after living so long elsewhere. Now, the accents are less distinct, as people have moved around, but back then a guy on the corner could say ten words and you'd know whether he was from that part of Philly, or visiting.
