Those courses were probably short. Just because he broke Foster's course record, doesn't mean he was capable of faster than 14:06. It also doesn't mean I'm capable of being more facetious than my first post.

I read somewhere that Snell met Coe and was amazed that Coe only ran 40-50 MPW. Coe did a lot of gym work however.
Kenyans dont drink during training runs and rarely during competition. Personally, I almost never drink during training runs and rarely during marathons. Even water will cause me to vomit under most conditions and I just dont feel the need for it. The digestive system essentially shuts down during a run so anything you throw into it has little value and may cause distress.

welcome to the thread Deano what took you so long to post? Coe never won a major race over a mile both on and off the track. From memory he lost a 2000m against Gonzalez and an indoor 3000m against Adrian Passey. As a senior he never contested the National or Inter=Counties XC champs nor ran a race over 2000m on the track ... I wonder why.

Did anyone that has replied that you don't need to drink on long runs even read the original post. The OP stated that Coe doesn't drink on any of his runs and will not drink for 4 1/2 hours before he runs. That is a big difference than not drinking on the long run. I never drank on long runs either, but I didn't go 4 1/2 hours before those long runs without drinking anything. I am always amazed at posts like this where a bunch of people reply, but didn't bother to read the original post correctly and therefore their replies are not consistent with what the OP was talking about.
Yeah the assumption that he wouldn't run long because he didn't hydrate is faulty to say the least. I just finished a 17 mile run without a drop of water... granted it was cool out but unless it is extermely warm out I am normally ok without.

my longest run is over 21 miles (in the summer) and it was done fast without fluids
granted i am 20 and live in new england
i would consider myself an average level competitor

Well. your memory has failed you and most of what you've written is completely wrong!
He lost a 1500m to Gonzalez in 83 (not a 2000m), the year he had toxoplasmosis.
He ran and won a 2000m race in Bordeaux France in June 82, beating Gonzales, Deleze and Wessinghage (who went on to win the European 5000m title 2 months later) in 4:58. He wom by 0.75secs.
He won many races over 3000m. He was English Schools intermediate champion in 73, was AAA Indoor Champion indoors in 79 and 81, and won various other 3000m internationals indoors, mainly against the USA.
Yes, he did get beaten by Passey in one 3000m indoor race, but so what? Everyone loses sometime.

No, he never ran the National X- Country, but what's that got to do with not being able to run a decent 5000m time? His frame and style of running didn't lend itself to running well on the country and he preferred to run on the roads.
But he did win the Schweppes International XC in November 78 over 2500m beating Newton, Wessinghage and Frank Clement, after a season of running predominantly 800m.
So to summarise, he did win many races over a mile distance both on the track, on the roads and on the Country. Certainly more than he lost.
Perhaps you should make sure you're better informed next time before making inaccurate sweeping statements?

We old folks will attest to the virtual absence of water stops in long distance runs during the Coe era. We ran scores of workouts of ten miles and more with nary a hydrating moment.

Are you sure you're quoting this correctly? I can believe 4.5 hours for food but water is absorbed in under half an hour and shouldn't be causing any sloshing.
It sounds very strange to me as well. It would seem that carrying a water bottle would hinder form (not to mention be annoying)and drinking while running would cause stomach issues. To each his own.
