Seb coe avoids long runs???

depends on the weather. I've done 15 mi in cool weather and not drink a drop. Morning runs when everything is nice and peaceful.

I hope the Brojos can answer this, since they are really big on " Strength equals speed".

I've gone 18 without drinking any water. If i stopped for a drink about 9 miles in, i wouldn't want to continue.

& then again, I do long runs at 7:20-7:50 mile pace

Your assumption is faulty. I\'ve never taken fluids during long runs, and I no one I ran with felt the need, either.

I pretty much never take a drink on a long run, unless it is especially hot out.

Up to 14 miles, good tempo, roughly 75-80' duration. Overall high quality of running, relatively low volume, similar to Lagat at his best.

Strength does equal speed in a sense but truth is speed also equals strength, because no one holds a speed they cannot achieve. Performance capability is always a function of peak velocity and the general capability to maintain speed, but the two aspects are quite intertwined. Strength without speed will only get you so far.

Wow there are a lot of liars on this thread- everyone knows it's medically impossible for a human to run more than 13 miles without drinking anything. Your mitochondria would dissolve. It's science.

Um this really isn't a hard question. He would include 10-12 mile runs every week but where he got his "strength and speed endurance" from was doing lots of hills basically every day. Watch the documentary on youtube if it's still up and you see him doing hilly runs and short and long hill repeats etc (and they are on the roads). His coach said "why pound the life out of a young runner if you can instead run with quality." So he doesn't have to just run for 13 or 14 miles on some random flat and soft surface to get strength when he's constantly running hilly runs and hill repeats on pavement. That gets him strength and speed endurance. Still, he did do 10-12 mile runs so it's not like he was completely without long runs (10-12 miles is actually pretty decent for a 800m specialist).

Coe ran London whilst he was an MP and got sub 3.

Fluids wise, some take them, some don't on longer runs. Whether he done runs longer than 90 minutes is another question.

However, if you want to see an athlete that's out of the ordinary, look at Coe. Outrageously talented runner, who's training was probably suitable only for him.

He was also keen on XC races in the winter early in his career. That would have helped his strength.

Great book, actually. Compared to other books of its ilk, it was very balanced and recommended a good mix of speed, strength and endurance even for non-runners...my Dad still has the copy I gave him 20+ years ago..

I've never taken a drink on a run, and have done up to 22 miles like that. Probably not a great idea, but I agree I don't like fluid sloshing around.

I have never drank during a distance run, farthest I've gone was 18 miles in 2 hours. It's never occurred to me to drink anything, but then I live in a very mild climate,

i do all my long runs (18 miles) without drinking water. i dont understand why him not drinking anything means he doesnt run far on long runs. am i doing something wrong? i just dont like to stop when im starting off at 6 40 and slowly getting down to 5 30

Well I just think going beyond 90 mins of running without consuming any form of fluid is really a bad idea.

This is taken from a running times article:

" The overall goal remains to match fluid intake with fluid loss during a run. Maintaining body mass that's within 2 to 3 percent of your pre-run weight and avoiding weight gain conveys appropriate hydration.... weight loss greater than 2 to 3 percent indicates you need to take in more fluid; your performance, especially at faster paces, starts to suffer significantly once you get past that amount of dehydration."

Drinking water on the run doesn't make you soft, it improves your performance in fact.

I assume you are "kinda" joking about this. I became a runner in the mid 70s to lose weight. Soon I got caught up in the racing scene and ran 6 marathons between 1980 and 1986 slowest 3:01, fastest 2:40. (Age 38 to age 44, height 6'2" and weight 160#) I never drank anything during any marathon (all were in cool temps). I did drink a lot prior to each and even had to pee up to 3 times during one them. It was the way many of us did it then. Today I understand hydration better and I'd try to drink quite a bit during the a marathon. Even now at age 68 when I run my long runs (90 minutes) my buddies will be soaked with sweat where I am only a little damp. I don't understand it really - certainly it's genetics to a degree.

That would explain why he has a 14:06 5000m PB.
