If you'll notice, the East Africans grab their first 10k WR in 1993. I'd say their emergence onto the elite scene had more of an effect.

I agree with you on the Africans, except to say that first African record was in 1977. It actually says in the post, but you can check it out - Samson Kimobwa with a 27:30 in Helsinki. Then it went to a couple of Europeans, and then in 1993, back to Africa for good.
How does a paper published in 2010 cite that many references from the 1970s and 1980s and still get published?
I'm not sure what other academics don't respect sport science publications? The field of exercise sciences is founded from the more traditional disciplines of physiology, epidemiology etc. and thus I can assure you is pretty damn rigorous in it's academic quality. Go and look at some biostats if you think sport science is some kid of joke.
This is JAP not necessarily a 'sport science' publication.
It is also an opinion peice, and therefore less academic in it's style.
