I was at a conference in Cincy years ago. Some colleagues and their kids and I were at a sports bar having lunch. In comes several Braves players, one being Chipper. They walk in the back and start shooting pool. After much debate, the kids finally decide to go back and ask for autographs.
They go back. (We can sort of see them from where we are sitting). They are back there FOREVER. The parents start to wonder. So one of the dads and I go back. There are these 3 kids shooting pool, throwing darts with these Braves players. It was (and remains) such a great day for those kids. Chipper signed everything the kids had (one dad even went around the corner to buy some Braves hats for them to sign). I know at least one of those kids still has his hat that was signed by all the players there.
Another story: Chipper is going through a rehab stint. He goes to Class A ball in Rome, GA. He forgets his spikes. He sends over one of the team club house guys to a local store. The guy pays for the spikes and leaves 2 Chipper Jones autographed balls. While there Chipper springs for dinner for the entire team.
Now Chipper has made his bad choices, but who has not and none of them killed anyone. However, I cannot recall any other player even accusing him of not being a class act on the field. The allegations of steroids do not seem to hold water, but I hate to say that it would not be out of the realm of possibility. If someone like A-Rod felt the need, what is to say others did not also dabble.
