Could Wheating end 2010 as one of the best 800-1500/mile runners in the World???

Wheatings goes 3:33 this year.

Lannana seems to think Wheating has plenty left for the summer.

Lananna is pleased: Oregon coach Vin Lananna had a hard time repressing a smile after watching Andrew Wheating and A.J. Acosta rewrite the school record book in the mile.

Wheating finished fifth in the Bowerman mile, but his time of 3:51.74 broke the Ducks’ school record that had been held by Olympic gold-medalist Joaquim Cruz. Acosta, was second in the international mile in 3:53.76, which is No. 3 on the Oregon list, ahead of Steve Prefontaine.

“I feel both guys still have some running left in them,” Lananna said.

Particularly, Wheating. Lananna brought him along slowly, planning for a peak this summer in Europe.

“There is a lot more in him,” Lananna said. “I’m way more convinced now that he will run big.”

Wheating to hire Wetmore: Wheating, who has completed his college eligibility said after the meet on Saturday that he expected to be represented by Mark Wetmore of Global Athletics & Marketing. Wetmore also represents Tyson Gay.

I wonder when the last chance he can get the 1500 school record is? He'll probably jump up in the 800 as well.

Wheating may run faster in the 800, IF he can get into a fast race, (doubtful) but to just toss out a possible 1:42 time is laughable. Considering no other American other than Johnny Gray has run in the 1:42's I think your "guess" is wayyy off base. It is very premature to attempt to elevate Wheating to this level. While he is very good by American standards, he is nowhere near being one of the top 800/1500 runners in the world this year.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but what does clarifying the theme of my question have to do with not liking the answers? As far as I can tell at a quick glance there are 2 runners currently in the world who stand out as clearly better than him as both 800 AND 1500/mile runners so far this year. The 2 who I already listed.

Feel free to elaborate as to who else you think is ahead of him or on the same level.

If Wheating improves on his 800 and 1500 this summer, and there is more than fair reason to believe he will, he'll be in rare company as an 800 AND 1500/mile man. Do you disagree? If so who all would you say are ahead of him? What's impressive is we're talking about an American who just graduated from college (and actually has eligibility left) and the best professional runners in the world. Aside from the 2 I pointed out nobody else has listed any.

Lastly, did I toss out 1:42? I thought I said he can run 1:44low-1:43 this summer if he gets into a fast race.

For clarification, I'm assuming those second times are season bests? Not sure what the case is for the 1:49 guy or the no time guy, but several guys are right around 1:45 flat. Perhaps a good agent could make the case that Wheating ran 1:45 on a double and won by a second, not a diamond league meet? Perhaps he could you PRE as an indication that his fitness is only improving?

It's up to his agent (who happens to be a great one) to get him into a fast 800, but it's likely he can find an 800 that goes at least 1:44, that should be better than ones that goes 1:46 and he goes by to win it in 1:45.

Plenty of season left to get in the right races.

THIS is the same kind of case we heard as to why Wheating should not be in the PRE Bowerman mile, and how he'd get killed once he was let in. How'd that work out?

This kind of thing is really lame, and obviously contrived out of envy. What does this really have to do with the subject matter here? Unless Ryan is going to run that and a great 800 this summer I can only guess you are trying to diminish the accomplishments of a current US runner. If you are American, what is the point in that?

What Ryan did doesn't take anything away from what Wheating is doing now. Ryan is a great benchmark (amongst many others like Webb, Lagat, Scott etc.), and hopefully by the time Wheating gets to that kind of mileage he's running even faster.

Wheating is now one of the biggest rising stars in the middle distance for the U.S. And to stay consistent with the subject of this thread, he is the best 800/1500 guy right now with Lopez just behind him and Webb potentially back in front if he comes back around.

What's more is he has done this with plenty of injury time and low mileage training. If he stays healthy and can increas his mileage he could be really dangerous.

FYI, from the register guard article:

Sounds like an 800 next an then 2 x 1500's.

Paris and Monaco are both on the diamond league, though not sure if he's in the fast heats. Assuming so.

Looks like for Paris he's there are currently 7 entrants and they include:

Choge, Kamel and Laalou.

So based on the 3 criteria, his last 3 races look pretty good on all accounts.

3:51 - Diamond League 5th

1:44.62 - Diamond League 4th

3:30.9 - Diamond League 4th

Off the top of my head Laalou stands out as the only 800 AND 1500 man convincingly better than Wheating so far this year, in the world.

Assuming he's still eligible, I think he just took the school record from a very respectable 3:36 to 3:30.

I thought Wheating was a badass taking on the slew of 1:45 & 1:46 guys with the Robby Andrews pressure on a double at NCAA's. Not only did he take it on, he stamped badass down the homestretch. He was clearly in another league. Comes back the very next day to outkick numerous 3:36/3:37 guys.

Yet remember how many people doubted him? Said he shouldn't get into PRE, and then when he did that he'd get killed.

3:54 1500 in HS first track season ever (not even on a team) - no fluke

3:38 1500 as a college soph, closing in :26 and winning (3rd track season ever) - no fluke

1:45.0, 2nd place at Olympic trials - college soph, 3rd year runner - no fluke

winning 2009 ncaa 800 with a calf strain AND stomach illness - no fluke

sub 4 season opening "jog" this year - no fluke

drilling down 3:35 man on the indoor DMR - no fluke

coasting thru 1:46 & 3:37 at regionals - no fluke

800 AND 1500 wins at NCAA in the same meet - no fluke

This guy is for real, and he is RAW. A lot of last year hampered by a calf injury, mono and a stress fracture. Webbs mile AR and the 1500 AR are both in jeopardy.

Quick look but I think the only runners who appear ahead of him on both the 800&1500 or 800&mile are Laalau and Kiprop, though he still has a shot to jump one or both in his next 800:
