Of the 7 or 8 under 1:50 indoor, only 2 broke 1:50 outdoor. Those are outstanding indoor times, but with the current facilities they no longer relate to faster times outdoor, but many times much slower. This is not new. Each year guys PR at UW, ND, & other places indoor that they don't approach outdoor. I remember UK's "potential 7:05" as predicted by some as running a bunch of 1:49 - 1:52 outdoor. There was an exception or two, but I think only one of those guys ran faster than indoor. By SEC, they were pretty much forgotten as a mid-distance team. Indoor tracks are so fast that they are no longer an indicator of big things to come, but more the pinnacle in itself with most struggling to duplicate the times outdoor.
I have been thinking PSU would be favored at Penn, but after seeing Oregon this weekend, it's hard to see how anyone beats them if they have anyone decent to go with Wheating, Fleet, and Greer (assuming they run at Penn). I can't see anyone closing faster than Wheating. There may be 4 or 5 teams that could win Penn in a normal year. Should be (in the words of Dick Vitale) awesome, baby!

Ever year guys hit their peak during indoor season and don't perform the same in outdoor and it has absolutely nothing to do with the tracks.

Sorry kids! I'm old enough to remember when 1:48/4:03 on an indoor track meant 1:46/3:58 was coming outdoor. It is no longer that way and I believe the oversized tracks are a big part, both by offering an advantage and by enticing runners to peak in February.
I was "too lazy" to look up the disputed facts that another poster spewed. If he/she wants that information, they can look it up themselves. I stand by the fact that a 4 X 800 time indoor no longer predicts 'best ever' outdoor as some are suggesting. I still am pulling for PSU to knock it out of the park indoor and out. I like to see people run fast!
If PSU were to break the 7:11 Franklin Field record - held by PSU from 1985 - that would be pretty insane. However, it looks like Oregon has the Penn Relays on their official schedule . . . this could be quite a race.
