Dr. Rundell, conducting the study was a senior physiologist at the US Olympic Training center for 10 years and is a top asthma, lung function research. Viagra was originally developed to combat pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in lungs). This is not so much of a performance limitation under normal conditions, but it can potentially help under conditions where blood flow to the lungs may become limited. Two key environments for this is high altitude and air pollution.
The actual tests are being conducted in an environment chamber where they simulate air pollution. It is very scientifically done, using high-tech particle counters to monitor the number of particles in the air so the room mimics cities with poor air quality (a setting where many races are run). They are going well beyond performance, investigating a number of physiological changes related to oxidative stress and inflammation. It's a high quality study and will definitely provide some answers.
