I have to agree, it is either Greg Metcalf (or his assistants, as he'll most likely claim).
I have to agree with Dan Waters this guy is a douche. And he screws all the runners he gets. A&M is going down fast, distance wise, their sprint coaches are the best in the business.
OK, it's a tie between Waters at Texas A&M and Metcalf at Washington.

I would still love to hear someone explain this one. Remember, we're talking 2009. I know Metcalf has seemingly screwed up a decently long list of AA-level runners in the past, but I just don't see anything for 2009. Explain it please.
You're not sending anybody anywhere. What do you think, you own your athletes? You idiot.

Eric Peterson of UCLA is an annual candidate for screwing up the most talent. The Bruin men's and women's distance teams once again underachieved in track. Same thing happens year in and year out. It amazes me. I will not send one of my high school athletes there to run. No way.
Vince O'Boyle of UC Irvine.

thank god someone said ucla. does anyone remember their recruiting class a couple of years ago? where are they now? I think they had a better recruiting class than oregon that year
I think you answered your own question...his history has been less than impressive. For 2009, he was pretty much down to Austin Abbott, and how has that turned out?? Looked unbeatable early, now anyone can beat him. The only Wash guys who advanced to NCAA's did it because of early season times. It's called not knowing how to peak a kid for races when they mean something.
Its called running 1:50 in the fall in a workout...
and he's a dick.
You've got it. Typical small town kid who thinks he is the best (in his small pond), in the world. Then goes to a university with a few provincial boosters who get their boy wonder selected as head coach (remind anyone of Slick Rick, also of WU fame?). Anyway, the AD gave him a contract extension so UW can look at an egoistic head coach for another three years.
what happened to laef barnes this year? he broke 4 last year, looked good at the beginning of cross, and then didnt do much at all throughout outdoor? he did well (for his season) to place well in the finals, but that 3:46 was about his best race all year.
When Metcalf understands that Track and field scholarships
should be used to build a total track and field program then he will be OK.
Heck he ought to just go ahead and pick up the uniforms for the entire year after the NCAA Cross Country meet.
Dave Smith with German Fernandez and ryan vail !!!!!
No just kidding...Smith is a real champ for his age !! soon one the best coach in the world
Yeah, I agree. But, he is screwed for the next few years because his only claim to fame was women's XC, and he sold out the rest of the program for that. Now he has all these XC/distance girls on full rides and basically an empty cupboard everywhere else (both men's and women's sides).
Still I'd say its pretty much a tie between Eric Peterson and Greg Metcalf.
I don't really get the haterade for Metcalf. I mean he doesn't have a perfect record but I would hardly say he f***ed up this year.
On the girls side they qualified 5 runners in the distance events for NCAA's and had 3 pac-10 champions. Lawrence has run 9:52 for the steeple and Follett was in the 15:40's for 5k in addition to winning the pac-10 1500. Kendra Schaaf has been redshirted (my guess is injuries) and Lauren Saylor just missed out in the 10k but those aren't epic fails.
On the guys side Schmidt was all-american indoors in the 3k (albeit in a diluted field) in addition to running around 13:55. I'm pretty sure he made nc's in the 10k. Abbott hasn't run well the last few meets but let's remember that he was a 4:14 high school miler who just ran 3:58 indoors. And the guy who said he looked unbeatable... what did he actually win? I don't recall him dominating a whole lot of races.
Now I wouldn't nominate him for coach of the year or anything and I'm sure there is talent under the surface that's not being utilized, but they did qualify 20 athletes to NCAA's and but together a fine crop of performances including the number 2 steepler in the country. Obviously not the best coach in the land, but he's not Pederson.
Sounds like a lot of excuses for Metcalf. If he has 20 qualified for the men and women combined that is possible, I suppose...but most of them don't have a chance. For example, the men's 4 X 100 counts for 20% of those going, yet they are the slowest of 18 teams at NC's, and slowest by nearly a half second...no chance in hades to advance beyond prelims. And so it goes. With the amount of money at UW and the size of the University one would expect more than a last place Pac 10 team. Is Metcalf really any better than Peterson? I question that contention.
So if your athletes aren't seeded highly, then you're a failure as a coach? Seems a little extreme to me - why don't we wait until after NCAA's are done and see what those kids come away with. There may be something going on of the "do enough to advance, but wow them in the final" nature.
Not saying I'm a huge metcalf fan by any stretch of the imagination, but wait and see the full body of work before judging.
I think that a lot of the "hatred", as you call it, toward Metcalf has to do with all of us seeing his smug attitude after the Washington women did so well in XC. Everyone knows that Kelley MacDonald-Strong was the one responsible for their success, yet Metcalf tried to take all the credit. I think that most of us hope that Kelley moves on to a program where she can get credit for her hard work. What did Metcalf do with his Distance/XC people before Kelley joined the staff? Nothing, except injure them and run them into the ground. Now he wants all the credit for a group of good runners assembled and trained by Kelley. He got his contract extension to 2011, why can't he put his ego on the shelf for awhile?
A lot of talented guys go to UW and join the party scene, pick up the bottle, become frat boys, etc. UW is both an urban school and is academically demanding. There are a lot of distractions and it's hard to focus solely on running as it might be at a place such as Oklahoma State, UO any midsize college town. You can't blame Metcalf entirely for the men's lack of success. Considering Abbott is their best runner right now is funny considering they have(had?) Carl Moe who ran 4:05/8:48 in high school.
It's a shame because western washington produces many talented runners especially in the greater seattle area, and there's no decent D1 program in the area unless you are good enough to go to UO
