But my pick is still McConnell if Kosgei doesn't run.

O'Brien can pull off the double... even if Kosgei is in the 1500 field. I think we will see him go for it with Jeff See and Pat Sovacool at the Jesse Owens Meet. Would not be surprised to see sub 3:45 or 4:03, leading into a great nationals meet. As for the 800, 1:47.xx is in the cards.

5k: Flynn

800: O'Brien (if he does not try to double)

Boffa (has a shot to win and will win if O'Brien doubles up in 1500)

1500: Kosgei (if he runs it AND only one other race)

McConnell (Has a chance to take it if no Kosgei OR if Kosgei tries to triple)

3kSteeple Kosgei (doesn't matter what else he runs)

5k: Kosgei (easily, if he limits himself to Steeple 5k double)

Kaul will win if Kosgei is not in the race, and has a very good shot if Kosgei triples.

10k: Kosgei if he runs it. Kaul is he Kosgei is out.

Kosgei, O'Brien, and Kaul are the clear top three runners to win championships. My guess is that there are five guys out there who can win a national title:

Kosgei, O'Brien, Kaul, McConnell, and Boffa.

I think O'Brien should give the 800/1500 double another shot. Why not? He already has the 800 title - twice. Get some big PRs in both during the season, and then give it everything at Nationals. If he bombs, props for trying.

Kosgei has won 800,1500,Steeple,5k,& Cross. He's still missing the 10k title. I think Kosgei should go for the triple like Yuot did a few years back. Like O'Brien, what's to lose? Run a Steeple PR during the season, and then have fun at Nationals. If he tries to 10, Steeple, 5 - I think he can still win all three (despite how good Kaul is).

I would love to see him attempt the Steeple, 1500, 5k. Can he do it?

I can't agree with you more that Kosgei has nothing to lose by going for a triple. He already has 7 national titles, might as well go for the individual team title on his own!
