My father suggested the following:
"Put the hurdles on the curve. Bolt them to the track. Put flames on the top of them, and randomly moving pistons. Good episode for the TV show "Wipe Out". "

Here's a somewhat serious suggestion: How about a 4 X 800?
I think the 4 X 8 is far more exciting than the DMR, which is almost always just a glorified mile race at that level. A 4 X 800 on the other hand can break open at any point. With each leg being of equal distance a lot of strategy comes into play to as far as where to position the team's stud.
I just think track in general needs more relays in the championships, indoors, outdoors, and olympics. It's such an easy way to increase the popularity of the sport. Sure most people don't really care about random NCAA distance runners, but everybody cares about Texas vs. Oregon vs. Michigan (etc.) Plus how great would USA vs. Kenya vs. Ethiopia in a DMR at the Olympics be??? Sure adding a DMR or a 4 X 800 would be messing with long-established tradition, but compared to some of the other ideas to increase track's popularity it isn't that radical....
NJCAA has 4x800 at its nationals.
How about a nice game of pankration?
The Indoor Marathon.
The Indoor Ultra-Marathon.
The 10m Dash.
and how about the Penta Jump?
The vertical leap. That way all the short (diminutive) jumpers with the lower hips have a chance. I always thought the highjump was flawed in that it doesn't measure who can jump the highest it measures who can get their hips the highest obviously a 6'8" guy has a huge advantage over a 5'6" guy.
Here is the info on the long hurdle race indoors. Two hurdles on each straightaway and it looks totally fun. We should have this race in the US!

Felix Sanchez ran this race in France last year and he raved about it.

Add a medley relay....1 lap, 2 laps, 3 laps and 4 laps (or 2-4-6-8, depending on the track), but you can run it in any order. Teams would have to declare their order on paper before showing up to the starting line. Do you sprint first, get a lead and hang on, or run the sprints last? It would add strategy to the meet and make it a little more interesting.
This is a great idea!
