I am coming back to this thread (although it might already be dead) because it bugged my ass at 5am this morning. Something is not right here.
I am even going to stick my neck out and state that there is no way on this planet that someone can
1. Run 8 miles at 155-165 HR at 6.40m/m
2. Have a Hrmax of 206
3. NOT run 17.30 for 5k any day of the week.
Now I am not saying that SadSad Runner is being untruthful, just that those three facts are not concurrently feasible. It is simply outrageous for this guy to only be capable of 19.11, if Nos 1 and 2 above are correct.
He may very well be overtrained, but if 1 and 2 are right, even if he did not run for the next week, I would expect him to pop a sub-18.00 in 8 days time.
So.
Either: the 8-miler starts out at 155-165 but climbs to 175++ after 30 mins or so, which would make it WAYY too hard for an easy day.
Or: the HrMax of 206 is a formula/age equation deal (which I hope not) and the REAL HrMax is more like 185-190, which (again) makes the 8-miler too hard for an easy day.
Or BOTH the above.
(all the time I am assuming that the distances quoted are accurate).
And the guy is hammering himself into the ground on the 3 other days without adequate base to protect him. (But we can discard the overtraining for now if he can still run 6.40m/m at a steady 165 HR)
It is generally agreed that the guy is overtrained (3 hard days a week!), but this is ridiculous. I coach a young guy who has numbers not unlike those quoted.
a) Run 165 HR (steady, not climbing) for 6.40-6.45m/m
b) HrMax (recorded) of 201
c) Runs sub-16.00 for 5k and DOES NOT EVEN TRAIN FOR THAT DISTANCE.
SadRunner, I again emphasise that I do not think you were not being truthful (maybe just not aware you were missing some vital parts of the picture) but can you please clear this up?
Thanks.
