Those figures are Max. mileage. Typically, Webb was 45-50, Solinsky 70, Ritz about 80.

Don't know if I over shot it but a runner by the name of Arron Mascarro (sp) ran under 9:00 I believe. He was from somewhere in CA. What happened to this guy?

Trackhead, I have just the analysis you're looking for. I'll post just as soon as I did it up.
Check out number 188, John Holmes. Man, how fast could he have gone if he was not dragging that third leg?

Trackhead, I didn't forget about you. Here:
Empirical support for what we already know to be true, anecdotally:
Average number of high school-aged students in the 80s and 90s compared to the 1970s. Total number of sub-4:10 high school milers and sub-9:00 high school two-milers in the 80s and 90s compared to the 1970s.
I don't have the stats but participation rates in track and cross country had increased during the 1980s and 1990s over that of the 70s. Participation rates of all sports are shown below.
Lets just take the data from the NFHS data and further extend my analysis.
1970s:
12,299,000 average HS aged children each year.
3,887,352 participants in all sports (boys)
95 4:10 milers
84 9:00 2-milers
Lets compare the other decades.
1980s:
10,780,000 HS kids (-12.4%)
3,387,482 participants (-12.9%)
75 4:10 milers (-21.1%)
51 9:00 2-milers (-39.3%)
1990s:
11,111,000 HS kids (-9.7%)
3,605,942 participants (-7.2%)
36 4:10 milers (-62.1%)
15 9:00 2-milers (-82.1%)

Although not the fastest 3200 ever, Don Sage's has to be the second most impressive behind only Nelson's 8:36. With 400 to go, Sage was a neck and neck with Tim Keller as they had been the whole race. At the 2800 they were at 7:46. Keller closed in a 70 finishing in 8:56, a very solid time. Sage blazed the last lap in a 56!!! to finish in 842. Who knows what he could have run had he raced an athlete the quality of Nelson or Virgin and the pace had been faster, because he obviously had a rediculous amount in the tank with 400 to go.
Some rrecords show that Virgin has the
high scool record because he ran in yards
which is slightly longer. I'm not sure
but did Nelson run that 8:36 after high school
but before college if he did that shouldn't
count as a high school record.
Example: Sage ran a 3:59 the summer before
college but it didn't count as a high school
state record

funny, i don't remember sage breaking 4 before college. i'm pretty sure that would have been on the news or something
it was a 1500
just wondering
what percentage of HS kids run 4:20 or faster?
is there a lot more that run times like that?
Sage ran 4.00.29 in the Pre, after his HS season had ended but before his college career began. Tim Keller broke 9 min 7 times his senior season- Malmo, how many others have done similar?
Many. Virgin ran the full 2 mile distance under 9:00 9 times, plus 8:10 and 8:16 for 3000m. There were many others who did the same. Merrick, Hulst, Serna, Hunt, Beck, Scharsu, the Mastalirs, the list goes on and on.

I don't think Arron Moscorro dipped under nine. Back then the Mastalir twins were the top dogs with 8:45 3200m and a 14:36 Mt Sac time which would be about 14:20 on the newer version of the course. Senior year Moscorro placed second or third in the West regionals at Foot Locker (Kinney) with about 15:00 flat on the Fresno course. Mark Davis blew everyone away by running in the 14:30's. Moscorro ran for UC Irvine and did ok there. He won a couple of conference track titles, but that was about it. I don't know what he did after that.
Thanks, Malmo- you are the man!

Tell all the bad girls.
Does anyone know who has the most sub-9:00's in High School.
Keller broke 9:00 for 2miles 7times? I wasn't aware of that. Sure it wasn't 3200 meters.
I would bet Alan Scharsu has to among the top three, maybe Hulst being another one, and Virgin.
It seems today kids point towards a handful of very big meets like Acardia and the post-season meets to run real fast and that's probably a smarter approach in the long run.
7 sub 9 3200s for Tim Keller. Sage broke 9 only twice, but to run 8.45 and 8.42. IL stopped running the 2 mile some time ago- been 3200 for a long time.
