Yeah, and there are some guys who wear running shorts with built-in liner panties, too. I guess they've never heard of a jock strap.
... Frank Shorter wore panty hose in 1970 Natl XC (AAU) champs
I guess the point that the kidders are trying to make is:
Tights and half-tights are readily available now, and they are better than hose. Everyone else wore tights, or just shorts. The Arizona kid brought gloves, hat and a turtleneck, why not tights?
It doesn't matter if Virgin, Rono or Lindgren (NCAA Champs all), or some football players did it 30 years ago. You don't do it now. It looks dumb.
P.S. Gavin Thompson from EMU (excellent 3rd place) seemed to be the lightest-dresser in the race with only gloves! He may have had a hat and discarded it, but by the finish he had just a singlet and shorts and gloves, no long-sleeves and no tights! He lost by 4 seconds.
what's disturbing about that picture is why is he wearing dark panty hose. he could have at least gone for the flesh colored ones so he didn't look like a total fruit.
I'm not disputing the fact that Joe Namath played in Super Bowll III or the fact that he wore panty hose. I just don't think he wore the panty hose while playing in Super Bowll III. The game was played in the Orange Bowl in Miami.
Really now, who cares? If pantyhose work better for someone than lycra tights, why should they wear the tights just because they're newer? Use what works and looks be damned. This isn't a fashion show! Heck, I remember back in the dark days of the early 70's competing at a freezing HS XC meet and the winner wore white thermal long johns and a matching shirt under his uniform. Did anyone tell him that he looked "gay"? No. Why? Because he beat everyone else, darn it!

No he didn't.
Pantyhose are warm, less expensive, and not as binding as tights.
maybe the idiot just forgot some tights and either extras weren't available or in his size from teammates and since pantyhose can be picked up in any drug store, maybe it was just the easiest thing to do.
either way, who cares. as long as he was warm and he didn't finish last, it's the guys who finished behind him that should be worrying.

Anybody see the pics on mensracing, those dudes from arizona were wearing pantyhose, now i know that it was freezing and alot of guys were subject to wear tights(bikers or full-length) even Ritz himself. But to go as far as to put women's pantyhose on, that is simply the gayest thing i have ever seen in my lifetime, i mean suck it up queers.
I would simply like to point out your user name NCAA WATCHER
Thank you

No he didn't.
no one, think R&R is right about '70. That meet was in Chicago and more muddy than cold. The '69 meet was in W Bloomfield, MI I believe and was cold 'n snowy. Maybe nylons there? Heck, nylons were relatively new then.
I can't believe I'm reading this thread. Pretend this isn't from me...
scotth (and R&R)perhaps so - I was there - and even ran (and 'our' team won)! Not a 'fun' race but a memorable one - perhaps there was just 'talk' about it. I do remember that being noised around. But 'noised around' and it happening apparently not based in fact - nevertheless I do remember the 'noise'. I can live with being wrong - point made.
Now that my memory has gone over the edge (far before this post), what did happen was he destroyed the field. usta have the T&FN with FTC guys on cover (still do somewhere) - their excitement was in anticipation of the team title - I have a story about that - which is true. okay - geezer fading to quiet here.
BTW, scotth - I need to email you for some ?s I have - & did you get my congrats on your kid?
Actually, we thought Virgin (and Durkin?) had the right idea. We were FREEZING and didn't even consider long underwear tops or bottoms. Thank God for the new stuff like lycra.
no one, yep, got your message about my son. Thanks. More on that AAU meet in Chicago...so muddy I stopped and yanked a shoe off. Didn't matter, I was 18 and slow that day. Doubt Frank wore nylons but...if you heard noise. He did win easily.
Sounds like a number of guys on here feel their manhood is being compromised by some runners wearing nylons, calling them gay and such. I have no advice on how to overcome your feeling less-than-a-man about wearing nylons but, please, curb the gay talk. Perhaps some day you'll feel more secure in your manliness and wearing nylons won't bother you.
scotth - yep, that mudfest took many out of their game - it was almost impossible to get any rhythm. But everyone was runnin the same course - went up to my upper ankles at times ...
someone should tell those arizona guys that vaseline works pretty well too...but make sure you explain to them that they are supposed to put it on their legs.
Damn, this thread reached forty posts? Is this topic really that interesting?
For myself, I don't give a damn what the Arizona guys were wearing. Why do you? Hell, I would wear a purple-and-pink-striped body suit if I thought it would help me run significantly faster.
OMG! OMG! Where can I find some panty hose like that???? Oh wait...I thought this was another Ritz thread. Nevermind.
Why would you put a petroleum product on your legs.
Nylons look good and they work quite well too.
