Endo doc - are you really an endo doc?
How can normal ranges depend on the lab?
I have recently dealt with a family member with low/no thyroid due to a genetic condition. We found that the endocrinologist only treated the TSH/T3/T4 numbers and not the symptoms. Once her numbers were in the normal range - which is subject to interpretation and as you said "dependent on the lab" the physician basically stopped further adjustments to medication, despite still being symptomatic. Reading some literature out there, we decided to take matters into our own hands and purchased additional thyroid meds while on a trip outside of the US. Supplementing with additional thyroid hormone virtually eliminated all of the symptoms. One of the symptoms was depression, once her numbers were within the normal range, the endocrinologist suggested an anti-depressant. With the additional thyroid hormones, there has been no need to take the anti-depressant. She plays the game and stops taking the additional thyroid hormone prior to visiting the doctor, so that her numbers are near where they should be, but I find it amazing, the number of endocrinologists who merely treat numbers and not symptoms.
