German Fernandez is also only 17 and a month younger than Derrick.
The course has a couple of significant hills, but is best described as rolling. Complete limestone trail, but not too much shade if you're running in the summer. That said, it is a staple training ground for Chicagoans looking to get hard-tempos or long runs as the main path is 10 miles.

That's a mediocre time, even on a tough course.
Who is the kid? And do I need to start visiting Dye Stat more often to understand why someone would post an entire thread about someone running 5:20 pace for 10 miles?
5:20 pace for 10 miles on a rolling course is not mediocre. Not for a high school kid. With that said, he most likely just cruised through it.
The kid ran a 13:55 way early in the season. He also won NTN and broke Virgins course record during XC.
Kid is gifted and has a legitimate chance to be top 25 next fall as a true freshman.
so you think it is smart to push that hard in July when 2 months ago he had mono and couldn't finish the track season? Why? If he can get back into this kind of shape so quick...then what is the harm in taking another month to make sure you are health. NCAA's are in November.

1. I was kidding (I had read the rest of the post and knew that eligibility was an issue), "dumbass"...actually I don't really think you are a "dumbass" since I can't convey tone too well over and internet blog, but please be less judgmental with the language.
2. I will still say it is less toolish to just not accept the money than it is to make a big ceremonial hoopla over donating it back, if indeed that is what he did. He should realize that he doesn't have to do fake things like this anymore for the sake of college admissions boards like I am sure he has been for years given his intelligence (again, if indeed it happened this way) and ambitions.
3. Are you entirely sure that you can't accept that money? I guess better safe than sorry (seems a little picky to me of the NCAA and I am surprised they would care...Is the issue that they cannot distinguish between a big pro race and a little local 10 miler?).
4. To the guy who said something about German being younger---that kid better be faster and generally more prodigal in running than Chris because he is as dumb as a doorknob. I have enjoyed Chris Derrick being in high school running this year because he is refreshing to listen to and obviously has many skills, both interpersonal and literary, which will give him much more than running ever could, whether or not he makes millions breaking records and wearing shoes. I would much rather have a degree from Stanford than one from OSU in Management plus the AR in the 5k.
The guy derrick beat is a sub 15 minute 5k runner and he ran like 51:05 at the scenic park 10 miler last year! That course must be a monster the say the least. The third place guy just ran 1928 for 4 mile ran at the elmhuerst 4 on the 4th. Derrick is back!
A really solid time against good competition. I think Kafel was a DIII AA at North Central if I am not mistaken.
Anyhow, I am sure Derrick is over his Mono and running 52 minutes for a 10 miler in July shows strength...which he will need running 10k for championship races in college. Last I checkd doing lots of 10 mile tempos is what the Wisco guys do to get ready for racing. Seems to have helped Teg and Solinsky quite a bit.

So I know a little bit about this...
He took 26 days off of absolutely no running or any other kind of tough activity when the mono diagnosis came in. He then ran no more than 50 mpw for the next 3 weeks to make sure he was feeling fine. After that he started getting back into the groove of his normal training because he was feeling strong. The race itself wasn't an all out effort (hard to go all out when you've never raced longer than 5k) and he shut it down a little with 2 miles to go.
Also he wasn't even at the award ceremony and just asked that the race director donate the money, so any hoopla associated can be owed to the race director.
Lighten up on the kid. I know his coaches and have watched him run a fair number of times. This kid is not only a great runner but as smart as anybody around. There is a reason he is going to Stanford. Its not because of running. He could have run at the Illinois State meet but he knew the risks of pushing himself at that time. He doesn't need the money either. This was a good run but nothing special by national standards. There was no need for there to be a thread here. All the same, lighten up because he is as good a kid as there is around and he will be a great if he has a coach.

But theres a HUGE difference between Renato Canova and a letsrunner's assessment of a runner's status. Thats like comparing Tom Landry with the average drunk fan in the stands yelling out orders to players on the field. So, he made a perfectly logical and valid point, you on the other hand are probably one of those idiot letsrunners or the same guy he was referring to just posting under a different alias.

give me a break. i'd say any 14:45 5k runner which is the majority of d1 runners could run 52 minute 10 mile and feel like it is a tempo. i understand that this was probably just a tempo effort for him also, so its nothing bad. but still, it doesn;t deserve to be treated as anything special
It is noteworthy because it is his first race back since being out with mono. The OP in no way said, wow, amazing run by Derrick!!!!!!! I thank the OP for making this thread because without it, I would have never known that Chris is healthy and up running well. Sometimes people make informative threads....

The 4 miler is a certified course! The 14 to 15 year old 8th grader(Lucas Verbicas) ran 2525 for 5 miles at the shamrock run in march and a 849 3000 this summer winning by 13 seconds!! He's from Litunia and his parents were both olympians too!
