Quigley (La Salle) runs 28:03 for 10,000m at Stanford FTW!

Congrats to all the runners; awesome times for 10k. As I read all the posts, I noticed someone said that 9:15 for 2-miles was average for an American high schooler. Has 9:15 become the new 9:50 for 2-miles? I would have been one of the top guys in the country with a 9:15 when I graduated from HS (class of 1997); where would a 9:15 place a runner today?

For the last several years, a 9:15 would but you 25+ seconds behind the national leader. Still good, but probably not in the fast section at NON.

I don't think 9:15 is average at all for a HS'er. It literally wouldn't be average if you took all the times. That makes you a very good runner. State class at least.

The average HS runner is 10-10:15, maybe a little slower, 9:15 is very, very good.

Think about it, if 9:15 puts you at 25th nationally, out of what, 10,000 2 milers at the HS level, you are not average.

Withrow's 28:26 is OK, not like his 13:30 he ran a couple of years ago though!

10-10:15 is not average either. I'd say high 10s, low 11s would be the "average" for all high school runners.

I agree that it is not average...but i think he just was intending to mean that he wasn't some 850 2miler in hs. I thought he only ran 916!

To the person who called this a breakthrough race for him...It was a big pr (2829 was what he ran last year for his former pr)...but after his 752 and 401 indoors i was expecting this. He should be running 2750 this year...this is definately not out of no where.

People forget that Quigley was a national champion in High School. He was a stud in High School. 15:06 5k indoor is pretty damned good.

A 9:15, done by a 17 or 18 year old American high schooler, still gets you a full scholarship somewhere; so let's not kid ourselves; that is still a top time and will be be winning the state title or at least be a top contender in most states besides Cali.

How about using common sense before replying. How many 9:15 2 milers do you know? Probably none. So how is that "average"?

I didn't know running a 15:06 5k in high school was average.

9:15 does NOT get you a full scholarship, or even close to one.

I ran 9:14 and dont even have/was never offered a half scholarship...get a clue.

Don't make generalizations. I had a teammate in HS who ran 9:19 and got a full ride.

9:15 is extraordinary.

you screwed something up b/c i know for a fact that this can get you substantial assistance (at LEAST a half ride), even at some good programs.

He was a very good high school runner that made an unconventional college choice and has been a great collegiate success. His course of action reminds me of Brian Sell coming out of college. He was very good and decided to go with Hansons (unconventional) and it has paid off in spades. I hope that he continues to make uncoventional choices and doesn't make the mistake of going to Salazar or something that will not appreciate his special talent.

If you run 9:15 as a senior in outdoor track you have already committed to a college.

9:15 guys do not generally get full rides to D1 schools. Thats a fact.
