Just like how many Heisman winners have shitty careers in the NFL. And how many runners have great college careers, but disappear after they graduate. It's because sucess at one level does not necessarily translate to sucess at the next.

Erika Odlaug ran well at CU for awhile, but was eventually sidelined by injuries.

Natasha Roetter was recruited by Duke but, if I'm not mistaken, she later left the team in order to pursue other interests in college.

Brauksieck went to Penn State, had some success in XC and in the steeple, but reportedly also dealt with eating issues.

You are referring to the Trotter twins, Amanda and Kathleen. This thread is about Amber, who is not a relation of twins.

I don't think a 5:29 last mile is dying at all. Dying would've been a 6:00 last mile. And guess what? SHE STILL WOULD'VE WON BY TEN SECONDS.

As for giving her credit for the 3200 record being "a disservice to the entire sport," I agree with you in a certain sense, but there has to be an exception here. She ran 16:22 on a moderate course with no competition. She probably could've rested for a week and gone under 10 no problem.

Amber Trotter DID run one collegiate XC race - in 18 and change for a 5K, in Albany, NY. I can't remember if it was her first or second yr at Middlebury

Amber Trotter ran at least three races her freshman and sophmore years, with each one slower than the one before, finally she just stopped running. I visited Middlebury's web site often to see how she was doing. The track coach complained of getting reporters calling from all over the U.S. inquiring about her.

Natasha Roetter and Linday Van Alstine both ran for Duke.

Natasha did not run her freshman year but, did run the next 3 years and was on the varsity teams that got 2nd, and 3rd respectivly in 2004 and 2005. She has now graduated.

She was 27th in the New England XC meet her sophomore year, 18:33 for 5km, #2 runner for Middlebury. Middlebury won the D3 XC nationals that year without her.

in 2001, senior amber beat soph scott baus by 15 seconds at the state xc qualifier meet.

It's definitely true that success at one level doesn't necessarily translate to the same success at the next level but most male footlock finalists have very successful college careers. Solinsky may have been the only superstar (although Billy Nelson made an Olympic Team) but Tim Moore was Big East Champion and I think a two time All-American and ran under 29 minutes for 10k. Bobby Lockhart was a two time All-American and part of a national championship team, Sheikh had a great first year at Northern Arizona (broke 14 for 5k, and I'm pretty sure was top 10 in cross) and he also had some success at Louisville, etc.

I'm not going to go through the whole list and certainly there was some big disappointments but I think expectations for footlocker finalists are too high. We have this idea that every guy who is a footlocker finalist should be All-American and every top 10 FL guy should be in contention for the national title. But when you consider that most good college runners run five years so theoretically every year you have 25 college runners who were top 5 FL guys (it's always less of course because some quit), then throw in the fact that most top Canadians compete at the NCAA level, a few dozen stud Kenyans, some of the best Europeans, and let's not forget the Aussies (and Kiwis) and it's pretty damn difficult to be All-American. I think it's a bit of a stretch to suggest than anyone who is All-American was a bust in college regardless of what they might have done in high school.

I ran the Avenue of the Giants half marathon yesterday and saw a familiar face cruise by at the back of the second pack of marathoners around mile 9. She went on to win in a relatively meager 3:09:53. Judging by how she looked after her finish I'm assuming a logging truck or two ran her over on the second out & back. I think that was her third or fourth race in the past year, probably her first marathon. Looks like she's back in Ukiah for whatever reason.

Umm...To be an All-American you have to be an American citizen. So being Canadian, or whatever, has no impact on All-American status.

I am not sayings the being All-American is any small feat- just being the typical Letsrun jackass and pointing out the flaws in your arugment.
