Get real people.
Shorter would win and then go for an easy 20 mile cool-down run with some real track work the next day.

Pre could compete well enough to get 4th at the olympic 5000,so yes he could compete.
Pre would take it..those guys would not have run the times they have back in those days either..plus he was still younger than those other guys
NONE OF THEM...they would get demolised into the ground by my little year 12 year old brothers friend, some african kid that beats the shit out of us at tag, even though we are like 300meters away he still freakin cathes us

Are you talking about a beer mile? Pre all the way!
Laggat's an American citizen now....so he should be considered unless of course we are just talking about American born athletes.

You are assuming Pre could hold his liquor. I beg to differ.

you are an idiot.
bannister sucks because he ONLY went 3:58, right?
you can compare times across different periods of time.
pre should be on the list because he got FOURTH at the olympics. im tired of all these little faux rebels trying to be hardasses by being different. no one says bob kennedy, teg, or meb are terrible (note all american record holders), but pre had 2k-10k and he is just straight garbage.

okay, but, it isn't a thread on who is the best runner, but who would win in a 5k. pre doesn't have a chance in hell against lagat
I don't think there is any question: Bernie, BK, Pre, Broe, Riley, in that order.
The race as is described? I would go with Kennedy. I watched him win many races he wasn't supposed to win, mainly 1500 races (and he was never a 1500 guy) against people like Joahan Boakes, Steve Holman, Peter Rono and he would go all out 500 meters from the finish. The toughest American runner mentally I've ever watched.
In the 5000 as desribed he would have to burn Lagat off somehow but we're not talking the Olympics or Worlds. Lagat wouldn't think it was worth it to hurt to win this race. Kennedy would. And Pre would have set it up by going early and Kennedy was smart to let that happen and key off of it.
In this interview Kennedy explains his reasoning for kicking from 500m out:

Seemed to work well for him. Good tips here for distance runners that want to beat true milers in their specialty event.
That being said, I think it is pretty obvious Lagat would win. Do you honestly think a runner who has run 12:54 at age 36 and who has also beat Bekele in a 5000 would lose to Kennedy? Come on
