David Honea was awesome, I remember that...
At the longer races.....
I raced him 4 times in Track my senior year. Twice at 1600 meters and twice at 3200.
I beat him both times at 1600 meters and he beat me both times at 3200.
He didn't have the foot speed to run the shorter high school distances (like the 1600).
He wasn't fast enough to get break me in the mile and then I'd out kick him on the last lap. But I definately couldn't hang with him in the 3200 after about 4 or 5 laps.
Very nice guy as I remember. Saw him a few years later on College Jeopardy and the a few years after that on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Very smart guy as well.

Where exactly is Sun Valley? Having grown up in the Greensboro area back in the mid-80s (John Erickson era at Southeast), I'd heard of Sun Valley, but never knew where it was. I just assumed it was in the west.
Union County - just a few miles east of Charlotte.
Joan also has the world record for the 45+ mile.
Just confirming that Hichman does not live in Charlotte. He lives in Arden outside of Asheville, and sells pharms for Glaxo.
Francine Dumas and Steve Carperter were married, and subsequently split a few years back.
Cooper's in Charlotte.
Tony Waldrop and Reggie McCaffee, sub 4 minute milers from NC in the early 70s.
Not to air dirty laundry, but what has happened to Paul. Although he as very talented, he was aslo the funniest and nicest guys I knew back in the mid 80's, but had some sort of issues caused by over training and then chased the problem for years while slowly going a bit off the deep end. I hope he is fine. His parents were good people, too.
What ever happened to Buddy Priest and Nick Winkle? Did those guys ever make anything of themselves?
how has Julia Lucas not come up

Tony Waldrop is a dean at UNC, I don't think he's running much anymore though.
Nick Winkel was an all american for wisconsin in the outdoor 10,000m in 2002. he stopped running after that
Many of the better runners were not in 4-A schools.
David Honea was the best XC runner in the state in 1986 but because of the breakout by classification after 1985 we had 3 or 4 different state champs. He was the fastest but and a Kinney National Qualifier but is not the list you show.
Carpenter & Dumas went to TC Roberson which was a 3 A school if I remember correctly but are only on the list because they were competed prior to 1986.
Guess those late 80's guys are all old, married, and washed up now. Wonder what ever happened to them?

Stone, what are you even talking about?
You got that right. I'm retired and making a new career in UFC super lightweight division.

He was something! great kick. He didn't stick around long enough; don't know if injuries ruined him or he just retired upon graduation.

Lightweight? ;-) Not taking after Kyle?
I outkicked Susie Kluttz last Saturday, feeling pretty spunky. Better watch out.
Francine is no longer the coach at TC Roberson, it's Dave Culp now, however Steve Carpenter is still the boy's coach. Francine had a baby a few years ago and still lives in Asheville.
