Really? How many world outdoor golds does he have in the 1500? Or Olympic medals?
I think people look at his 5k record and overall success and forget how often he got beat in the 1500. If we talk about not having 1500 killer instinct, Jakob is poster boy.
He’s had a better overall career, but he is most known for getting beat twice in the WC before not even medaling in Paris 1500. Eugene/Budapest/Paris golds all 5k.
(I know he got the one gold in Tokyo 1500 and a couple silvers but that means he got beat, which is not dominating.
Jakob is 7-2 against Nuguse, 8-1 against Hocker, and 9-3 against Kerr. He destroys everyone in times under 3:30 other than El Guerrouj. He has an Olympic Gold and two WC silvers, as well as an Indoor WC gold. That is better than anyone since Asbel Kiprop. He is by far the fastest 1500/Miler since El Guerrouj if we discount Kiprop’s nonsensical time. He has 17 DL wins only in distances from 1500-2000m. He has three European Championship Golds. The list goes on and on. If your definition of dominating is just how they do in the finals then you should have retired with El Guerrouj 24 years ago.

One of the all time greats but he’s not even racing right now and didn’t matter last year.

I said by far in the original post. And he did matter last year indoors. Yes he likely is out of shape right now.

Please reminisce about Jakob's bygone glory days in some other thread. This thread is supposed to be about the guy who is currently winning 1500m races on the Diamond League circuit: Yared Nuguse.
I didn’t know that this was a common perception of Yared. I’ve thought this of him before, notably after the Budapest final where he seemed very content to be out of the medals, but I think he probably has a different mindset at this point

Responding is not reminiscing. I already said nuguse is likely best in the world right now.

Just a refresher, this thread was about killer instinct or whatever, I’m not saying Jakob wasn’t faster or hasn’t had a better career, but ultimately people criticize Yates for not having killer instinct and arguably the best 1500 runner of the era got beat twice in the WC and then didn’t even medal in the Olympics… my point is that even the best of the ERA didn’t dominate the championships (and my point was because of the depth… there are so many guys who can have a great race)

Perhaps he hasn’t separated himself by far as a championship 1500 racer. No man really has since Morcelli, as even El Guerrouj had the help of pacers in a few of his title runs. But I would definitely say he’s separated himself in general. I mean even the way you say he’s most known for his losses shows this. Who else can you say that about? It’s not a shock, it’s not an event, it’s not a moment anyone even really thinks too much about when any of the other top milers loses on any stage. I think in some people’s minds Hocker was approaching that point this winter and then immediately had one such shocking loss

It’s just comments by people who don’t understand running and thought he was soft by not keeping up or passing the leader (usually Jakob) or thought all he had to do was try harder. I doubt his mindset is any different now vs then.

He ran incredibly aggressive in Paris. The last guy to go for it in a championship 1500m like he did there, was Bayi in the 1974 Commonwealth. He took on a nearly impossible task and came up less than a second short. When it comes to 4th place finishes, Pre’s fails in comparison.

Nuguse has demonstrated killer instinct throughout his professional career. Look at some examples from before Budapest in 2023:
Millrose: Nuguse took the lead with 400m to go and proceeded to destroy everyone on the last lap, winning the race and breaking Lagat's US indoor record.
US Championships: Nuguse led the majority of the race. After he got passed on the final backstretch, he fought to regain the lead and won.
London DL: McSweyn had a 10m lead and Nuguse led the chase pack to narrow the gap. Then Nordas took the lead and Nuguse tracked him, ultimately passing Nordas to secure his first DL win.
Nuguse didn't have a great day in Budapest, but even in that race when he was out of the medals, he still showed fight by battling with García Romo for 5th, leaning at the line to beat him out by .01.
After Budapest, Nuguse went to Zurich and beat newly minted world champ Kerr. Nuguse was only in 4th at the bell and had a lot of work to do. With 50m left, it looked like Kerr would win but Nuguse kept pushing and got him by .02.
Then Nuguse went to Eugene and had the guts to go with Jakob and run 3:43.
Anyone who doubts that Nuguse has had killer instinct all along should go back and watch those races.
The whole he didn't have a killer instinct was so stupid. You don't win NCAAs, make multiple teams and get a Bronze medal without being a killer.
I do think he had a post Olympics down year last year, and he is back a bit hungrier this year.
I don't think Nuguse suffered from a lack of hunger last year either. He started the year with a world record in the indoor mile! After Jakob broke it, Nuguse made an attempt to reclaim it.
GST was whatever, but Nuguse showed killer instinct again at Pre by going out with the pacer and making that field hurt. He didn't win, but it wasn't from lack of effort. He just didn't have quite enough at the end to hold off Laros, and he made a mistake of drifting out into lane 2.
He once again did the majority of the leading at the US championships. He just didn't get the pacing quite right, and the competition was stronger than ever before.
After his disappointment, Nuguse gave it his all in Europe. He won in Silesia, finished 3rd in Brussels (a race he didn't need to do), then ran out of steam in Zurich.
Last year didn't go the way Nuguse wanted it to go, but he went for it.

Hard agree. Yared fights hard in his races, that is not the issue. I think people might mistake that he he has a long stride and not the fastest shift of gears so other athletes can occasionally beat him to a spot (Hocker), interfere with his moves/stride, and so on. That to me is why he has "off" races or gets shuffled back, not hunger/killer instinct. He wins way too much to be lacking in that final department. But there're some holes in his game in unpaced races, though that's true of pretty much everyone.

Being comfortably the best isn't the same as dominating. You cant be dominant if you lose far more often than you win in major championships at a given distance during your prime. We don't need to be hyperbolic in order to respect his superb body of work.
