Crazy that she’s even top 10 in CA in the 400. She’s US #1 in the 800 and has also had the US #1 times in the 1600 and 3200 this year. Has anyone ever done what she is doing?
You can talk about the Maxwell sisters, Dumas, Zang, Bartlett, Lowen, Shepard, Barada, Hennessy, Dudek…If people debate who the best track athlete in the country is, I don’t know how anyone can name anyone other than Braelyn Combe. Her range and kick are incredible.

Kaitlyn Estep in NC is showing that sort of range from 400m to 5K and she is just a sophomore!
Although that's insanely good, especially since she's more of a 800-1500 runner (I guess her range is better now), Doing that at a dual meet makes 0 sense.
She ran it in a dual meet because she isn't planning to run the 3200 at the state meet or in any of the national meets. So this was her best chance to run an all out 3200.
This makes complete sense. Last chance at the distance ever.
Multiple 2-mile national records have been set by guys running solo so the benefit from pacers is minimal. Kipyegon had similar pacing during her 4:00 attempt and it didn’t seem to make any difference.
I would prefer she hadn’t run a Kipchoge style race that resulted in her time possibly not being apples to apples with other leading times.
Because of the male pacers will it still count as a state record?
Can't they just retroactively declare they identified as female for those 9 minutes? California allows men in women's sports – they should have no problem with this

This is a load of bollocks. Pacing makes a significant difference. Just because some people have run fast times without pacers does not mean that they would not have run significantly faster with pacers. Solo vs. a pack makes a big difference. That is why so many guys run fast times at arcadia every year.
How didn't Engelhart run faster? A low 4:20 miler who is aerobically developed (runs well enough in XC) should be able to run faster than 9:44...
Sadie Engelhardt didn't take the 3200 seriously towards the end of her high school career. She probably could have run sub 9:40 if she had really wanted to.
Not sure how long they could have hung anyway, going 4:57 then 4:47. That's some crazy work.
The pacer didn't run the exact pace that Braelyn Combe and her coach wanted. It wasn't intended to be that big of a negative split. He's just a high school kid who's not used to being a pacer, but he was at least in the ballpark.
The goal was 72 the first lap, then 3 laps of 74, for a first 1600 of 4:54. Then 4 laps of 73 for a second 1600 of 4:52. That's a total of 9:46.
Broken down for each lap, the pace was supposed to be:
72
2:26
3:40
4:54
6:07
7:20
8:33
For some reason during the race Braelyn's coach (who was on the mic) forgot what the splits were supposed to be, otherwise he could have asked them to speed up a little.
The coach accidentally thought that the splits he had chosen was 2:28 and 4:56 but he was actually behind by 2 seconds. He should have written the splits down instead of trying to remember them.
Fortunately, Braelyn finished very strongly and broke the record anyway.

Pretty amazing. I would guess if she's out in 4:50 she could probably go even faster.

Steve Prefontaine 8:42, Craig Virgin 8:41 and German Fernadez 8:34, all ran solo for their national 2-mile records, and for good measure, David Moorcroft ran a solo13:00 WR. There is no way they would have run significantly faster with pacing. Performance wise, all those times were consistent with their mile PRs.

Then please sue all the meet directors who provides rabbits (pacers) and pacing lights. They are clearly negatively affecting races. In fact all races should be done solo (like bike time-trials) to elicit the proper racing response.

Referencing things 18 to 50 years old. It's time to move forward, the sport has changed.
