That's a lofty expectation. The world record of 3:26.00 has stood for over a quarter-century. Only four men in history have run 3:26, and it's only been done once in the last decade. A couple guys running 3:25 this summer would be shocking.
Well there's a difference between being in 3:25 shape and actually running it. I believe Hocker was in 3:26.5 shape at the time he won the Olympics, but he never actually ran that time. It's the time I'd expect he'd run in a perfectly paced race at peak shape.
I believe Hocker with two extra years of uninjured training should be able to improve by half a second over his Olympic shape, and hope that one other person also gets there with all the talent there is right now.
Myers is already in 3:28 shape in March, so you never know.
Hocker was 100% not in 3:26.5 shape. That’s not how it works.
We need to see Myers, Ruthe and Lutkenhaus line up together in a 1500.
Coop is far too low mileage to hang with the Wonders from Down Under in a 1500, just as they’re nowhere near speedy enough to give Coop a real race at 800. Just let them continue to improve in their own events for a bit and maybe they can meet at … 1200m at some point.
Seems like Myers could have snagged a World Indoor gold medal if he had made the trip to Poland…
I don't think so in the 3,000. But in the 1500 if he'd just said "Nice try, Mariano" I'll take it from here at 900 to go or 800 to go, it's pretty hard to imagine he gets beat. It would've given Nader an easier trip in just running on his shoulder but Myers looks at a different point fitness-wise than everyone but maybe Hocker/Kerr presently.
This was really impressive. It was certainly windy out there. Good pacing for 900 meters (to set up a big kick), but makes me think he could make the next step to 3:28 fairly soon in a DL type race. He said Stockholm, Oslo and Pre. Not sure I love the two 1500s in four days thing. They have the same thing for the 800. I assume the races will be mostly the same guys.
Can he run 327 later this year? Crystal ball says YES.
Can he? Sure. Will he? Probably not. Do I want him to run that fast and faster? Yes? Do I hope I'm wrong? Also yes. Did I really need to write this trivial monologue. Probably not. Did I actually write it. Sure.

Agreed, I meant in the 1500. Still to be seen if he’s surpassed Kerr and Hocker. Looking forward to them going head to head outdoors.

Commonwealth Games 1500 is going to be a great one just like in 2022. Probably Kerr, Myers, Cheruiyots, Wightman that's awesome. That and the World Ultimate 1500 will probably be the two best showdowns of the year with Pre, the European 1500 final, and maybe some other DLs working their way in. I'm really not worried about Myers in DL paced races, he's going to be excellent in them, but the next thing will be hanging with the big boys in unpaced ones.

If you give us the answers, we don’t the questions.

Jakob did 1:46.44, 3:28.68, 4:50.01, and 7:27.05 the year he turned 20 (2020)
Laros did 1:44.19, 3:29.20, 3:45.94, 7:29.49(i), and 13:10.86 the year he turned 20 (2025
It will be interesting to see what Myers is capable of this year
(3:30.42, 3:47.57 (i), and 7:27.57(i) so far)
Laros moreso than the impressive times won what 3 DLs with 12.7 or so in the last 100? Couldn't pull it off at Worlds, but showed he had the ceiling to win the World title all season. Habz, Mills and Koech ran faster in a one-off, but their seasons kinda show how times aren't altogether that important. Myers has been great at ripping times always, but the real progression will be if like Millrose, he starts beating up fields like Laros did. Commonwealth would also be a great stage to show progress in a championship event.

Just an FYI: it's a mile at the Commonwealth Games this year.
Glasgow 2026 will see the return of the Mile to a major championships athletics programme. It is a distance that captures the imagination like few others in the sporting world. Its unique history, spectacular performances, an...

I have been positive on Hocker since his 3:50 mile indoor in 2021 BUT I don´t think he has been in 3:26 shape in A TYPICAL WR RACE where the WR contender must be prepared to solo the last 500m after the last pacemaker drops out.
Considering that he ran 3:27 mid in the OG final with pacing for 1400m he was rather in 3:28 shape at that time.

I agree that Myers seems to be the real deal and that he might be a guy who can challenge the 1500m WR in the not so far future.

an aside: Farken fell again! This is beyond absurdity at this point, the rate in which he and Mills fall. It looked like someone took out Jude Thomas’ legs (not sure if Farken/Antsey) and then Farken fell over Thomas and then Antsey got sniped from behind by Farken while he was already stumbling.
