So he can lose by 1.5+ seconds, assuming Cooper has a decent day and Sam has a great one?
Ruthe is an incredible talent, one of the most exciting young milers we have seen in recent years, maybe the most exciting since Jakob.
The hype around this race before it happened, the excitement at the idea that he *might* go sub 1:46, really puts in perspective how impressive Coopers run at USAs was last year. I know this gets said every time a young phenom blesses the track with an unbelievable performance, but 1:42.2 as a 16 year old might actually be something we never see again.
That 1:42 is the only time Cooper has broken 1:45. He has only broken 1:46 twice. He is incredible, but sometimes people have trouble replicating world-beating performances. You don't know how a race between these two young men would go
lol. Cooper is 3.8s faster than Ruthe. We certainly know this race this would go. We don’t have to make everyone on the same level to the same of debate. Cooper also closed in 12.48.
Ruthe is AMAZING. And I hate that we have to compare where there is no comparison. Cooper had a run a solo 1:45.5 with a negative split in the rain. He had also split 45.3 on a relay. The under speed was more than enough.
I don’t see 1:43 in Ruthe. At least not this year, but I think he can run 3:33/3:34. A better comp is Owen Powell.

How old are you? Track is a very "what have you done for me lately?" kind of sport. Talk to me when he runs 1:42 again, he is a human, not a robot. He did not run 1:42 the last time he ran.

Apparently a lot older than you. And most likely a lot faster.
If 4s is competitive gap, Wanyonyi should be worried about Sam Whitmarsh.

I understand your fantasy matchup in your fantasy land where athletes run their PR every time they run. Clearly Cooper will disappoint you if you he doesn't produce 1:42s every time he steps on the track. Clearly you ran a PR in every race you ever competed in.
A 4 second gap between an athlete's PR and second best time means they are not a guaranteed shoe-in to run their PR. Otherwise they would just give out medals based on rankings and not bother holding championships

I don’t understand expect him to run 1:42 every time, but I expect him to beat Ruthe every time.

You’re deflecting and contradicting yourself.
BTW, Ruthe is superbly talented. However, at 800m, Lutkenhaus is other-wordly, just a bit green. It’s likely Ruthe will never match Coop’s PR, never mind be a match over two laps. He doesn’t have the 400m wheels. And you know it.

Deflecting how? Follow the thread to my initial reply. I never denied the gap between their PRs. Cooper's PR right before he ran 1:42 was 1:45. Then he ran 1:47. That indicates they might both match up around low 1:45 right now, more than it indicates Cooper would blow Ruthe out of the water.
Yes, Cooper is a generational talent. You are all placing a lot of pressure on him is my point.
Uumm no. The race that Cooper ran his 1:42 had 8 guys run sub 1:45 and it was in perfect conditions. Ruthe just ran 1:45 with only Tanner to compete against and the conditions were nowhere near ideal. If Ruthe was put in a Diamond League race 6 months or so from now with a stellar lineup and similar perfect conditions I believe he too could run something extraordinary.
Yeah, Cooper had a pretty perfect day to run 1:42. Biggest/peak race of the season, no expectations, he paced himself perfectly, the front of the race was so fast he had people to mow down the last 200m, and he just had a great day. No one should be surprised if he doesn’t (or does) run 1:42 again this year. He could be in the same fitness and only run 1:43 mid.
Also, this is faster than what Cooper ran indoors last year by like a second. I don’t think Ruthe will run 1:42 this year, but 1:44 low outdoors in good conditions + faster competition is definitely possible after today, and 1:43 is on the table, which would be competitive with Cooper/anyone in the world.

Huh? You’re expecting Cooper to run 3 seconds off his PB because he ran a bad race in Tokyo (tactically mostly) in his first ever big spot. And you’re expecting Ruthe to PB again after getting a near-perfect race in the height of his season. If you want to say Lutkenhaus would only run 1:45 right now because he’s only in base training and rusty that’d be one thing. But there’s no question when he is revved up in the season (probably not til June/July) like Ruthe is now, the expectation is 1:43-44 not 1:45pt if he gets into a fast race. It’s a weird comp to begin with as Ruthe is a 1500 guy with decent speed, and Lutkenhaus is a 4/8 guy with decent strength:

Yes, Ruthe peaking right now and Cooper not having even competed is why I am saying a matchup where they both go 1:45 is the most likely outcome.
