Surly there is a nice sum of prize money Samuel potentially has won here today. Under the current NCAA rules can he keep any of it and still be allowed to compete in the NCAA? Who paid his expenses (flight & hotel) to Houston? is it allowed under NCAA rules for New Mexico to pay? Is it ok under NCAA rules for the race to pay?
Rodriguez and Maier both with fine runs, and Linkletter continues to chip away in an impressive fashion. A bit shocked at Clinger. I’d certainly consider that quite a breakthrough.
Distance running is getting insane. Cam Levins breaks 1:01 and finishes in 17th place. An ancient Sara Hall finishes in second place. A man runs 2:05 in a somewhat obscure marathon. Taylor Roe runs 1:06:20 and we aren't even surprised.

I'm not shocked at Clinger. He's always been a huge talent, just has taken him a bit to get back near his potential after his mission. He was 5th and 6th at the last two US 10,000m championships as well, and during his marathon build Mantz and Young said that he's has been hitting workout times that neither of them could when they went pro – he just had some fueling issues at the Chicago Marathon. Should also note that Casey is not young either (27), older than Maier (25) because y'know, BYU.
2:05:45 but yes I think it’s him and Mantz then everyone else in the US
Believe, after today's Houston Half, US has a "big 3" of Mantz/Talbi/Young.
Clayton doesn't have the glittery prs of the other two but knows how to make US teams and race well in global championships.
However, lurking in the underbrush is one Habtom Samuel, a man currently with no country since Eritrea has disavowed him.
Presuming he completes his four years of NCAA eligibility at NM next year, he might choose the follow Talbi into the Army Reserves to gain immediate US citizenship.
Since Eritrea refused to allow Habtom to compete in the '24 Paris Olympics as well at last year's Tokyo WCs, Habtom would not have to wait 3 years to become eligible to compete for the US in international competitions.
Meaning, we very well could see him on the starting line for the '28 Olympic Trials, either in the marathon or track 10,000.
Weren't there something like 37 Japanese students who ran the equivalent of sub 60 at the Hakone Ekiden?
4 Doesnt seem that great
Yeah sure, call me when 37 Japanese men actually run sub 60, not some dumb conversion
Only two Japanese have been under 60:00 in a standalone half marathon (though the Hakone legs are FAR more important to Japanese than any standalone half marathon), but 69 have been under 61:00.

Shoes are worth 5 seconds per mile. Not sure how much bicarb helps at longer distances, plus whatever else they’re doing. But the shoes help that much. It’s obvious to an intelligent, practical person not living in denial.
It’s pretty wild to think it takes a 59:01 guy to win NCAA XC these days. What a run.
Wild to think that a country can have 4 guys under 60:00 in one race, and can't crack the top 10 at World Cross Country.
For a sport that basically every US track/road runner races in HS/college, the US really underperforms at cross.
It’s largely due to a matter of timing. World Cross is run when US guys have already shifted to indoors or even outdoors. None of them grew up running XC in January, let alone in late March when Worlds is traditionally held.

I think this race is a changing of the guard in the Marathon - USA got some legit young talent.
Solid race from Ford and Clinger as well
I cant wait for the "changing of the guard" im sick of the same names finishing 5th to 33rd for US. Lets get some new also rans who get hyped up on LR because they run well in mediocre, US based marathons but cant compete on the world stage

I would think it would violate the terms of his student Visa, even if he is being paid an appearance fee from abroad because he is being compensated for work he is performing in America (you aren’t allowed to work in America if you are here on a student Visa).
