Alex Maier almost got Mantz's record at 59:23. Conditions looked about perfect this year (better than last year when it was super cold and windy), but still crazy good times all around.
Editor's Note: We almost doubled the number of US men under 60 minutes in one race.
Surly there is a nice sum of prize money Samuel potentially has won here today. Under the current NCAA rules can he keep any of it and still be allowed to compete in the NCAA? Who paid his expenses (flight & hotel) to Houston? is it allowed under NCAA rules for New Mexico to pay? Is it ok under NCAA rules for the race to pay?
I think this race is a changing of the guard in the Marathon - USA got some legit young talent.
Solid race from Ford and Clinger as well
No. A half-marathon result is not a changing of the guard in the marathon. Different events.
I still would favor a Maier, Clinger, Ford over say a Galen Rupp, Andrew Colley when 2028 rolls around. It's not 1 to 1 but the odds are looking higher.

Maybe we have a different interpretation of changing of the guard. To me, changing of the guard means a change in who's at the top. Rupp hasn't been a top American in a couple years. Rupp and Colley were 10th and 11th fastest in the US last year.

Yeah and given that Rupp ran 62:30 today I don’t think it’s much of a hot take to have Maier over him 2 years from now. I think Rupp could make the team, but everything will have to go perfectly. Maier could be a top contender if he can manage a 2:06 in the next couple years, which should be possible based on this run.
Also, what could Rocky Hansen have run if healthy? 2nd behind Samuel at XC, and was training for WXC. Would he be close to the AR?
