Every time I get tempted to buy a dog, I am snapped back to reality, watching some grown a$ adult in my neighborhood standing around trying to look natural while their dog takes a dump on the sidewalk, then bending over with a plastic bag to clean it up. Geez cmon, that’s pathetic.
I make an exception for people who work at a dog kennel or something. That’s for work and has to be done. But following a canine around the neighborhood, waiting to collect his crap? No way dawg.
Dog excrement leads to rampant ringworm in parks, communal areas, etc. as well as being a hazard to children & recreational park users. If you have a dog clean up after it. Don't be a douche.
My favorite dog related things (in no particular order):
- finding a steaming pile of crap on a sidewalk
- finding a steaming pile of crap in my yard
- finding a dried up crusty pile of crap in my yard
- seeing someone's yard in late winter / early spring / after a snowmelt when they've let their dog crap in their yard repeatedly without picking it up - and all the dog crap piles are visible b/c the snow melts around them a little bit faster.
- finding a bag of dog crap that someone left somewhere
- smelling the bag of dog crap that someone put in my trash can
Neighbor would let her dog poop and then pretend to not having seen it so that she didn't have to pick it up. It was obvious as hell when you saw her quickly look away.
So once i heaved a pile of it onto her porch.
How do you like that?
When I lived on the Westside of L.A. most of my neighbors were of a type who always play victim along with preteding to be incredibly moral - lots of entertainment types, etc. The ones that owned dogs would always pretend to not know the dog had crapped (look the other way etc), or they would pretend to pick it up while actualy leaving the mess there. If you yelled at them they would go into victim mode and try to act as if they were being physically attacked. It was hilarious in some ways, because it never worked. They loved walking their dogs when it was dark because it was easier to hide their poop and run behavior.
In the Sac area suburb I live in, I rarely, as in almost never, see dog poop on the sidewalk, at the dog park or any other parks. During the 10 years I’ve lived here, dog turds has been left on my yard maybe twice. A dog dump takes about 15 seconds to pick up. The bag is about a foot long and easy to carry to a place where it can disposed of.
The people in your neighborhood were uncouth and retro by about 30 years. Is your new neighborhood better, or is it the same thing everywhere in L.A.?

I’ve never understood why other dog owners pickup their dogs poop. In my area, squirrels, deer, chipmunks, foxes, etc all poop outside and I would never pick theirs up either.
The more I read this thread, the more I feel inclined not to pick up my dog's poop. But I'll do it anyway because otherwise how would I leave it on that other guy's roof?
In a related matter, I owned a Australian Cattle dog several years ago. She was a great running companion. She could hang with me on long runs, and she loved it. On those early morning runs, she alerted me when there were stray dogs or coyotes roaming about, and once she spotted a bobcat that didn't look too friendly.
One early morning, while I still had her leashed, she refused to cross a street. She literally wouldn't budge. A few seconds later, a bus went roaring by. She saved my life.
Police dogs are the coolest.
What about search and rescue dogs? They are the bomb!
My brother with lupus has extended his life and improved his condition simply by having a companion dog.
Dogs: Man's best friend. Yes, it is a little degrading picking up dog crap, but in the end it is just a procedure involving sanitation and biological processes. When I ran with my dog partner in large regional parks and open spaces, I unleased her. She would run off and take care of her business, who knows where? I obviously would not clean up after her. She probably wanted a little privacy! LOL!

Nobody should own dogs in urban areas. Even in suburbs, where they have their own yard to poop in, they are usually a barking nuisance. They should only be allowed in rural areas.
Dog owners are filling an unrequited need that should have been filled by other humans. The typical urban dog owner is so unlikable, even a cat would reject them. So they have to get a genetically-engineered, loyal, unconditional love critter like a chihuahua or dachshund.
which btw, every new generation of chihuahuas and dachshunds is a new instance of animal cruelty. Imagine breeding humans into a race of twisted little gremlins, just for entertainment. The people who own these dogs don't respect dogs, or they'd refuse to participate in that grotesque Frankensteinian shenanigans.
What's silly and degrading are those signs i see in my neighborhood: an image of a dog taking a poop with a crossed out circle over it or just a slogan like 'please clean up after your pet'.
Have worked for a non-profit. I can’t tell you how many times we haven’t been able to move somebody in need to a better situation because they refuse to get rid of their Dog.
Huge strain on finances, time, and stress. They’re a ton of work when they are a puppy, and a ton of work when in the last few years. Save your money, use it for travel and investments. Dogs are parasites to humans.

yeah, I like your terminology, "grotesque Frankensteinian shenanigans. Indeed, those puppy mills are inhumane and produce sick animals. All of my pet dogs were rescued.
