Yes of course they do. I was in Melbourne in late November/early December one year and it was mind blowing. Wintry Christmas decorations and I was walking around sweating. Songs about "winter wonderland" rocking and I am in shorts. It was strange.

I've spent Christmases in Hawaii, Malaysia and the Philippines. Every place celebrates the holiday with their own cultural idiosyncrasies. People in SE Asia have never seen snow and the idea of having a live pine tree in the house seems completely exotic and foreign (most have never seen a live Christmas tree).

In the Philippines the Christmas season literally starts in September. And people there drive around with those stupid reindeer antlers on their cars, even though they don't know what a reindeer is. Most have never even seen a deer of any kind.

But those cultural quirks just make it more interesting and fun.

True, but 90% of people live above the equator, not just Americans. Chinese, Japanese, Russians, Europeans, Americans, Mexicans, Canadians, etc. All of us celebrate Christmas during the cold season. Aussies and the rest of the people living below the equator are very much the odd ones out.

In the old Julian calendar, the solstice fell on December 25 and therefore this is how the date of Christmas came to be celebrated on that day. Early Christians just picked a day that was already being celebrated.

When most of the Christian world switched to the more accurate Gregorian calendar, Christmas and the solstice became separated by 4 days.
