Josh Hoey won December. He is the best middle distance runner in the world, in December.
Whether that carries over to the European circuit next year is unknown.
I think Hoey's main fault in hindsight will be that he's trying to maintain year round peak fitness like Jakob Ingebrigsten in the 1500 and 5000. The anerobic intensity of the 800 is not sustainable year round until he proves it wrong. If he were smart, I would say he would be better taking this year's indoor season off from racing and slowly build back up. He's too impatient for that, and he will eventually hit the inevitable wall I know is coming.

mind you, all the guys are training thru this one, none the less he's up against strong aerobic people with B game plus, after a ultra anaerobic performance.
genuine question but can someone explain to me how josh hoey is a december merchant or burnt out? He ran fast well into US/Worlds, ran a stupid race at US trials, and then came back and ran 1:42 in the rain (beating arop and wanyonyi) after the trials - in what world is that burning out. yeah he pooped the bed at the DL final afterwards but how much can you chalk that up to burning out so much as having a bad race + the nerves of this being essentially your only shot at worlds if he was so damn consistent the entire year?
I think I know who this is. I’m trying to prove that you’re not supposed to run the first 800 in 2:17 if the pace was set for 2:25. But also that you’ll get yelled at if you run the workout exactly as prescribed. Is that enough of a shout out?

Lots of people run great after trials every Oly/Worlds cycle after missing the team because there's no real pressure there. That's easy to do when nothing major is on the line and everyone else is peaking for worlds. Still, he sh*t the bed and lost to a high schooler and a man who really hadn't run in three years when it mattered the most, after his daddy literally bought him a track and hired a coach who was arguably one of the best 800 meter coaches in the world, and he still couldn't get done. He was great at World Indoors though.

I don’t think he burned out really. If he burned out it was between World Indoors and Grand Slam Philly where we’ve heard he was sick and didn’t train too well. He was consistent all year and just screwed up USAs with a too-fast first lap and a brutal last 150. People do say well the HSer that’s crazy, but if you watch the race again, Brandon Miller (as frequently happens) made some horrific tactical moves. He should’ve beaten Hoey too. Certainly had the fitness. The issue now is if he hits the same point this spring BUT doesn’t have Rinaldi to moderate him and get the train back on the tracks before racing which naturally keeps things in check.

Can someone explain what is going on w/ Ollie Hoare? He said on last week's pod that he was in really great shape and was going to go after the WR (!!!!) possibly with Yared and George (who was also in this race and is always the most seasonable of the trio) audibly guffawed. Of course, Hoare was not only almost 10 seconds away from 3:51 low, he was also DFL.
but there is still pressure? the wild card spot from the DL final which he had a good shot at coming off worlds and i don't think cooper having the greatest u18 athletic performance OAT and donovan brazier (a former world champion) beating him out after he ran a poorly paced race (and also donny being in the greatest shape of his life after coming back) equates to him burning out over the season.

i think the last point you made hits the nail in the coffin but at the same time i don't think josh is that stupid to kill himself that hard in training. yeah he might get a little out of control but he is still a pro and knows what hes doing

A sub 4 mile, in December, with a hair pin turn? Not tragic but am thinking his p.r. days are behind him. What's your take?

It seems like the workouts just aren't translating, losing to Brazier is rough.
My theory is his 800 ability/raw speed has faded, so his improvements in threshold aren't translating to the 1500. So basically assuming he's fitter than ever because of improvements in one variable, not realizing another variable isn't where it used to be.
He has basically no 800 race results so hard to know for certain.
I know it’s December so not everyone’s in their best fitness, but how is he destroying Kessler, Nuguse, and Beamish in a mile just a week after setting a 600m world record?
Because he's planning to burn out even harder than last year outdoors while Brazier and Lutkenhaus will benefit from a staged preparation for outdoors that is less of an injury and exhaustion risk. Legends are not made at World indoors or road miles in December.
This is true but, financially, is he taking the safe road?
He's picking up a lot of smaller paychecks instead of gambling on the few big ones the may not pan out.

Was hoping Ollie would have a better finish. Good runs for Josh and Hobbs

This is honestly a very reasonable take. The core group isn't getting any younger and we're already seeing guys jump ship to the roads and longer distances. I feel bad for Ollie. It must be super frustrating banging his head against the wall and not getting results. Maybe he just needs more time marinating in his new system. If things don't get better by August, a full review and reset of his program might be necessary.
