Dudek, Bartlett, Williams all well clear of the NXN field today.
They each have Golden Tickets, so presumably will be in San Diego to run it back all over again.
Except, this time, running up a steep, winding hill twice, on firm dry grass & dirt, in warm, sunny San Diego.
There will be a few additions to the field, most notably hometown favorite Chiara Dailey, but can't see her or other non-NXN gals staying up with the Big 3.
Don't think Williams will try to gun it from a mile out like she did at the CA State Meet (successful) or today at NXN (unsuccessful -- but looked great while it lasted). However, Morley Field being essentially her home course, Jaelyn should be well versed on how to use the Upas St hill to her advantage and not bonk on the final ascent like she did today on the Glendoveer steepes.
Intrigue is presented by the potential bounce back girls. Of the handful of NXN pre-race favorites, Summer Wilson was the glaring underperformer. Others with placings lower than predicted include Aelo Curtis, Gianna Rahmer, and certainly Addy Ritz. All have Golden Tickets.
What makes the Morley Field course a "10" in difficulty is primarily due to the 2nd ascent up Upas St. hill. Coming at approx the 2.5 mile mark, it kills the legs & spirit if race energy has not been properly conserved. Many a national-class runner has been reduced to a pedestrian, spotted walking to the top.
Initially leaning towards Williams FTW . . . but now I'm back to my pre-NXN quartet of Dudek, Bartlett, Wilson, Williams. Dudek showed she has the best kick and may be the fittest, Bartlett should be well prepared for Upas after running up the Bowdoin Park mountain a couple times this fall, Wilson has a week to figure things out and should be out for redemption, and Williams is the most familiar with Morley Field.
Also, my guess is, the order of finish will change . . . but still to many variables to identify a clear winner.
