How competitive will the "Fun Runs" be at the 2026 World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee?

By UK standards that's a warm flat short trail race. Our XC courses test strength rather than speed. Here's a video of last weekend's race in Lancashire, Northern England. Filmed by a backmarker but gives a great impression of the underfoot conditions and steep climbs/descents. The bog of despond is at 17:50 and the treacherously slippery descent at 19:50. Three and a half laps of fun/suffering .

I'm planning on the 4k - wish they would have combined the races so it wasn't as long between awards and adult 4k. Why can't the high school and adult races go together? No prizes - just a finishers medal... Gonna be a long wait....

Yep, 4k is a long wait. Primary reason I'm doing the 2k. I'm a volunteer so going to be a long day already.

Yeah - they scheduled so much time for each race... I think they could have kept the 2ks and 4ks together... a delayed start would have helped as well... Youth 2k start 5 mins after community 2k, and community 4k starts 10 mins after high school 4k. I think I have a few more weeks to decide if I want to switch to the 2k and save an hour...

There are no McDonald's restaurants in either Kenya or Ethiopia.

Thanks for sharing the full schedule. I actually like that they do the 4k last. Although we'll have to wait longer, it allows more time to digest lunch, and it provides an opportunity to find a place to sit after the medal ceremony and rest the legs for a while before warming up for the run.

Standing for such a long time watching the races is going to be tiring, so I like the idea of being able to take a load off before it's time to test my mettle against my fellow hobby joggers.

Yes - if you have nothing to do, the break will be good. Sit and watch the other hobby joggers for a while, plenty of time to watch medal ceremony and still get a proper warmup - all good things... but could also just be ready to get on with it after such a long day...

I'm planning on running; seems like too good of an opportunity to pass up. It'll be neat to say that you ran on the same course as the best in the world. And it's not that expensive when you consider that it includes your admission to the pro races.

But I'm not really going to race it. I've got a marathon the next weekend. I'll probably just try to run MP for the 4k.

As for club nationals, I really don't want to give USATF my money as long as Max Siegel is still in charge. So even if I weren't running a marathon the next weekend, I still wouldn't sign up.

There are masters and (M) seniors races, as well! Check past times and see if you'd like to run in your age bracket.

He's clearly not interested. Even the masters races are way too "serious" for what he is looking for.

Having open fun runs on the same course sounds great! I went to watch the Belfast World XC back in 1999 and there was a road 5km Race for spectators to do the day before. It was fun, but running on the course would've been cooler. It rained all day at Worlds and they had to race in shin-deep mud.

I'm travelling there to watch the world championships. The fun run is a nice bonus!

2k fun run race: over 300 registrants

4k high school: ~200 registrants

4k (not high school): over 400 registrants

Excited for this weekend! Flying out tomorrow, but not sure what shoes to pack. I mentioned I don't own spikes anymore, but I'm worried about the mud.

For guys who are doing one of the fun runs, what kind of shoes are your bringing? Are you going to spike up? I'm thinking of just wearing old trail shoes that I wouldn't mind getting trashed in the mud.
