Based on his track results (3:35 as a sophomore!), I think it's safe to say he's a 1500m guy. Individually qualifying for XC as a 1500 guy is killing it. As good as he was in HS XC, 5k is a whole different beast than 10k.
I agree they didn't look too strong at ACCs this year. I think a week or two ago I said they have a really young team, and if Lex stays healthy, next year they could have a podium contending team. This year though, I fear they may not even make it.
Based on his TFRRS, he’s a 3:38, 7:54,13:31 guy. Not sure that’s a 1500 guy. He’s a good runner and has some really good results (made USA’s XC, etc). Based on his past performances, I would say he’s currently running OK, but somewhat below his past performance level, not killing it.
Maybe our definitions of killing it are different. To me, saying he is killing it is saying he is running at his best for a period of time. I wouldn’t consider his current season to be at his best. Doesn't mean he’s bad or that i’m somehow attacking him. He’s certainly running better than most of the Stanford team.
He did run 3:35 though in the post season. That’s really fast at 21
Their recruiting is way down. Evan Noonan is top notch but the rest of the most recent classes are similar to an Ivy League program.
Ricardo is not that good of a coach. There's NO reason that a school like Stanford should not qualify EVERY year. The school is awesome, the training environment is awesome, the track facilities are awesome, and they have a boat load of money to throw around. What gives? Ricardo doesn't even need to try and recruit, he can just sit back and read emails from everyone who is dying to go to school there and pick the best runners. He literally only has to show up to workouts with a stop watch, put the boys through some basic generic training plan, sign 'em up for meets, get 'em there, feed 'em, and get them to the starting line. DONE!
I’d argue that Stanford is not the auto trophy most people think it is.
The biggest reason is your athletes are not running first. They are all things Stanford first, then running.
Academics, networking, life stress, keeping up with other geniuses. I also think they avoid going all in on running because they are used to nothing but success. Can’t not be the best at something!
look at the Stanford kids when they go pro, huge jumps! Grant F wouldn’t be competitive at all with his current college times.
So, one of the best high school recruits of all time might be able to qualify to participate in the National meet as a junior and you think he’s killing it?

I would say tho that I feel like Leo is a more strength based 1500 guy just based on him not having a spectacular kick. I’m just saying when he gets older he’ll have an option to move up in distance and he’ll do very well there too

Leo Young ran 3:35:96, a personal best by over 2 seconds, while placing second in the 1,500 meters at the Portland Track Festival on June 15th. It took all of 30 seconds to find this information on the internet. Note that this performance occurred about a month after the school year had ended. An academically demanding university like Stanford can take a toll on a student's available time and energy. I think it would be only fair to reserve judgement on Leo's development until after he is in a post-graduate training environment.

It's a mix of this and the poster who said it's easy for them to recruit.
Stanford can generally get best recruiting class, but it's small since they do both distance and t&f events.
If every recruit is a hit and develops well, they are very good. If they have injuries and recruits who jump into the academic and extra curricular opportuniies that Stanford offers, then they will not be great.
Many years they have had 3-4 stars, but were just missing depth. This year similar. If top 5 have best race at regional, they could still sneak in to nats. More likely, it's wait til next year.
I disagree that Stanford pressure is a ball and chain for runners. Sure, it's demanding, but they know what they are signing up for. The pressure is actually a priviledge; why you choose Stanford in the first place.

In some sports the Cardinals have shown strong conference‑results. For example, their women’s soccer team this season is 13‑4‑2 overall and 6‑2‑2 in ACC play. EZDriveMA
One thing is for sure though, Leo has been killing it this season! He might even individually qualify for nationals himself!
So, one of the best high school recruits of all time might be able to qualify to participate in the National meet as a junior and you think he’s killing it?
I haven’t been too up-to-date on the ins and outs of the younger young brothers, but it seems like the stride report really wants to make them happen when they’re not doing anything of note

They have Leo ranked 38th which seems perfectly reasonable

To bring this full circle, if someone said Leo was going to be 38th at the national meet as a junior, when he graduated high school, would everyone have considered him to be killing it? I would have expected him to be better. He’s not a bust, but probably hasn’t lived up to expectations.
